Just a question for you all, can you do any damage letting the car idle for to long. Why i ask is had bub in the car asleep so misses went in the shop 40 minutes later!!!. Had car running for air-con. I know with petrol it is not good for cat-converter but i have never owned a turbo diesel before. I know you are ment to let them idle for a short time after driving but 40 minutes?.

    Hi Addy.
I dont think there would be any issues with that.
Some diesels run at low speed for days in genset applications (allthough not at idle)
And I have never heard of issues like oiling up like twostrokes do at idle etc.
And so long as your temp needle didn't rise to crazy levels i think its fine.
And I also dont think there is and carbon monoxide to worry about either.

What will happen a low speed is the cylinder liners will glaze up, and you will get a build up of carbon on the head, which will affect the performance of the engine. But this is nothing different from sitting in traffic.
One of the best things you can do for the engine is put it on the open road for a good run and this will burn all the crap out of the engine.
The engines in the car are classed as a high speed diesel engine, which are designed to run at more than 1800rpm.

You can also get 2 stroke diesel engines that are used alot in the marine industy, they give you a better power to weight ratio.

        Hi Craig.

I used to work in hydraulics in tassie.
Did a lot in Beaconsfield and also at the wharves at Burine and Devonport.
The container forks on the docks/ rail are two stroke diesel.
Cant remember the brands but they sure did move those 40' containers quick.
With lots of noise if I remember correctly.

That doesn't help Addy but just thought Id tell ya.
