According to my car manual, the 1kd's have a cat converter. Do I need to use a specific engine oil?

From what I gather, the pajero and pathfinder diesels need some expensive synthetic stuff because of the emmision system.

without going into too much detail, the "Cat" is a catalytic converter - primarily responsible for breaking down the nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide exhaust emissions into less harmfull products (water, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide).

Some cars have a diesel particulate filter - (the pajero has one from memory) - and this is aimed at stopping the soot (carbon particles) from being emitted. That's the black smoke you see belching from some less than efficient (overfueling) vehicles. Soot contributes to smog.

As for oil types - not an issue for cats - only for particulate filters so basically for yours (and my) D4D - a special oil is not needed as the Prado's dont have a particulate filter.

Have a read on PP about oil types. there's a lot of info there and the owner's manual gives an indication to the grade of oil required.
