    Warm start diesel rattle

    Hi there, I'm a newbie here and I have a problem with a 1KD engine, D4D.
    I work at a dealership and am having a great deal of difficulty with getting any info about this particular problem.
    It is a hilux but is a 1KD engine. The vehicle presented initially with a terrible diesel rattle while the owner was driving at highway speed, and the problem persisted when the vehicle was started. Fuel pressures were tested with diagnostic device and it was found that pressures of over 400000kpa were present in the common rail. Testing at the time by another tech lead to a diagnosis of a failure of the common rail assy and a new rail and sensor assy was installed. Vehicle left only to return with rattle issues still present, but definately not as bad.
    Now it's my turn.
    The vehicle starts and runs fine when cold, however after the vehicle is at operating temp, a strong diesel rattle is heard for a few seconds after starting the engine. Monitoring the pressure in the rail, it can be seen that the fuel pressure spikes to 120000kpa for a few seconds, when the actual target pressure for the rail is around 35000kpa at idle. Initially I suspected the supply pump, however this tests OK. The injector feedback values are within spec too. This is a different problem to the injector issue that there is a thread on already.
    I was wondering if anyone had had a similar problem, and how was it resolved?

      If you are talking about the diesel rattle in D4D thread, I have searched through the 40 pages already and didn't really find anything relevant to the problem I have, as most of that relates to injector failure and cold start up. If you meant another thread, can you specify which one or post a link?

          Just reviewed a few of the posts in that thread again, unfortunately it is a different problem. Mine is an operating temperature start fault, not cold start, injectors were in spec when I checked them. Only faults for a couple of seconds then completely normal. Will have to review a bit more data when the vehicle returns. Any other help greatly appreciated though...

              Absolutely yes, and normally I wouldn't be bothering with this in my own time, however I just put it out there on the off chance that someone would say "yeah, that happened to me and it was fixed by this..." thus saving me and the customer time and money, it is a slow process going through the right channels. Just trying to speed it up a little.

                  Mate I gotta say you've got some decent size plums coming to a public forum, representing Toyota, and asking whether any one else has had this issue. Knowing that Toyota monitor this forum, it kind of looks a little weird having one of their reps asking Toyota owners pretty much how to fix this problem.

                  I don't mean to sound like a prick here, but... Given that my dealer is trying to fix my injector issues... If I found out that they were asking how to fix the problem on a public forum I'd be changing dealers pretty quickly.

                  Surely the owner of the D4D still has warranty on the vehicle? It is commendable that you are taking ownership of the problem and going to the extra effort to please the customer so I applaud you on the effort.

                    Too many Kms, out of warranty, thought you guys would be more helpful to someone trying to help your fellow toyota owner out. Forget about it then.

                      Not toyota, just a worker trying to do the righty by someone in my time, just been thinking about this issue and thought I would pose it to the masses, forum style 8)

                        At first I thought you were a Toyota tech but after reading again I came to the conclusion that you were a third party repair centre tech. Anyway I would still be placing my money on a faulty injector. I have had both situations in my D4D, the first was when the engine was cold it would rattle but would disappear after it warmed up and then in an attempt to get me back on the road whilst waiting for the new injector to arrive Toyota installed a secondhand injector they had pulled out of another D4D the week before. This injector rattled when it was warm, it just depends on how the injector fails.

                            Scoot... don't take it the wrong way. I don't think anyone was having a go at you - but your post did appear strange. It looked like a Toyota tech was going direct to a public forum for answers, I'm sure it certainly raised some eyebrows. If your motives are to try and get a quicker resolution for a customer, you ought to be commended for showing some initiative.

                            The topic of a diesel rattle for some Prado owners is a real hot issue... just refer to the existing threads on this forum. So your post was always likely to draw comments given some of the responses Toyota dealers have provided to Prado owners about their diesel rattle problems.

                            Anyway, I hope you can find an answer to your customers problems.

                              Yeah, sorry about that. Because it is out of warranty, we're not going to get much help from the big "T" but I'll let you know how it ends up. It will be fixed, no doubt about it. I can do it!!
