I have a 2005 GXL TD manual with about 36000 km. Almost since new it will increase engine temp. as I drive up long step hills. This usually occurs as I cruise at 100/110kph and try to maintain that speed with the cruise control. It mostly does. The gauge is normally a bit over a third and moves about three needle widths to about half. It returns to normal soon after the hill. I thought it was normal as a diesel produces more heat as it gets more fuel. It came up in conversation when I was researching ECU chips for the car and one of the guys thought that Toyota cooling systems should be able to handle the extra work on the engine. Any Gurus with advice?

    Thanks

    Garry

mine moves under load, e.g. climbing a hill offroad that is generating some wheelspin.

but i would assume, that if it is dropping back down after the hill, then the cooling system is doing it's job!

Mine does it also when towing, but I also have a auto.
All engines temp will move as the load changes on it.
The more fuel (load) the bigger the bang, the bigger the bang the more heat and opposite with less fuel less bang
Even the V6's will do it, you might not see it but they will

My Pajero Turbo Diesel did it,
My 80 series Landcruiser Turbo Diesel did it and
My '06 Prado Turbo Diesel does it.....
I start worrying when the guage creeps up past halfway

Garry, I wouldn't be too concerned. Mine does it, too. And when I had the camper trailer it didn't seem to make any difference.

Driving around Sydney the last couple of weeks when the temps have been in the high 30's, or even low 40's last Saturday, I noticed the temp went to 1/2 way and the fan ran almost continuously.

I reckon it's good to see the car has a cooling system which is capable of keeping temps in the mid-range even when hot (43 deg last Sat!)

Thanks every one for your responses. It is important to me to get a feel from people who drive our vehicles rather than rely on the Toyota Servicing people who have a vested interest.

I am preparing for a trip up the Canning Stock Route in August and I want to make sure I fully understand what my car does. It will be interesting to see what happens when I fit the ECU chip.

              Regards

At least you have a temp gauge that actually works with each degree that it goes up. My last car was a Surf 2.4, and they were fitted with a 3 stage gauge. They moved from cold to normal, normal to hot, then from hot to too late !!!
I like to see my temp gauge work these days. 3 grand to keep the surf cool convinced me to trade up
                cheers
