  • Safari Snorkel intake noise

A pretty simple question, I have searched and not found much info about my particular question.

I have a D4D Prado and a couple of months back got ARB to install a Safari snorkel.

Since the snorkel was installed I have noticed a lot more induction noise, especially in the higher revs. To me it almost seems breathless when its approaching 3500rpm, the sucking of air is quite loud, and seat of the pants says it doesn't go quite as well.

I saw the pics of the tubing that goes in the inner guard to connect the snorkel, its does look more restrictive which is probably the reason I am hearing the sucking noise.

Is anyone else experiencing this type of noise at higher revs under load?? To the best of my knowledge, this induction noise (sucking of air) didn't exist before the snorkel.

If its not normal, what could be causing it?? I found some reference to the little grill on the air ram being loose, I checked that, and it doesn't seem loose.

    Any input greatly appreciated.

    Re: Safari Snorkel intake noise

Mine does too. Such a sweet, sweet sound IMO.

I've only had mine fitted for about 3 weeks now, but I would say apart from a little more wind noise around the pillar and that biiiiig slurping sound, these is a marginal gain on fuel economy - took a bit longer under the same driving conditions to hit the marks, so maybe the anecdotes about it being able to breathe a little cleaner and cooler are true.

    Next fuel stop will tell.

Yeah but the induction noise is sweet and they just make the rig look so much tougher.

        Re: Safari Snorkel intake noise

        Thanks guys.

I was almost alarmed when I heard the sucking noise the first time, given how quiet it all was before. If everyone is experiencing it then its definitely normal. Yes they do look much better with the snorkel. I got an ARB bar fitted at the same time too, so it dramatically increased the toughness look 8)

I don't find that I have better economy unfortunately, using my calculations I have never gotten better than 11l/100km. Ordered a Scanguage yesterday, and have an upcoming trip Melb to Alice Springs soon, so that should be enough to calibrate it 8) Will see how the economy goes then, I find its a little hard to gauge because of the huge fuel tank. More often than not one fill will contain a fair bit of towing (boat or camper) and some highway and some around town work. I dislike servos, and I haven't been dedicated enough to go in and fill after a long highway run to test the milage, I just wait until its near empty, then fill.

          Re: Safari Snorkel intake noise

I had a Safari Snorkle on my 2005 GXL Diesel Manual. I had it fitted from new so I couldn't compare what it was like without it. What I didn't like was the rattling like noise. It sounded like there was a ping pong ball in it. It would be worst when there was a head wind. This noise would mostly occur around 110kph. My fuel consumption was always around 11.5 l/100km. I now have a 2008 GXL Diesel Manual and I loved how quiet it is. I recently fitted an Airtec Snorkle. A much nicer profile and it can hardly be seen from the drivers position. I get a slight wind noise now from about 90-95 kph, but it is not intrusive at all. I am very happy with it.

          Regards

            Re: Safari Snorkel intake noise

We have had both TJM and Safari snorkles on my prados. On my old 2 valve TD the TJM was fitted and no induction noise. Main complant is the holding bracket is under the door seal, this damages the seal and creates noise. Then the screws fall out because the dumb fitter stripped the self tapping screws. The Safari is mounted outside on the pillar and does not suffer from the same wind noise. Induction roar is a different thing, the extra noise on the common rail gave me quite a fright the first time, but now i look forward to listening when the turbo starts to work. This noise is similar to the clutch fan fitted to our old 80 series. Would never have a 4wd without fitting a snorkle.

              Andrew,
I know this is a bit of a late reply to your original topic, but the induction noise from my snorkel is starting to annoy me also.
I had an airtec prior to this on a Navara and don't remember any noise issue. Was wondering if you have done anything else to help this issue?
I was thinking of trying those 'sock inserts' and see if it changes, otherwise might se about those 'not so good looking' Troopy style clear bucket head types for the top of the snorkel. Surely the best 4x4 brands 'Toyota' + 'Safari' could've made it quieter...
              cheers

                Re: Safari Snorkel intake noise

                Hi All,
I had the same problem with a Hilux I owned, The safari snorkel on the Hilux had a foam section at the top and Safari told me it was there to try and stop some of the noise. Trouble was it started to break up and was in the end, down near the air filter. When I tried to purchase a new one they told me they gave up on the foam as it did not last. They changed to putting a metal disc at the very top of the snorkel with about a 40mm hole on the middle, just glued to the top with silicane. When they told me the price, I went home and made a plastic one from a Vegemite lid. The idea behind it was the change the air flow in the snorkel to block the sound from the engine travlling up the snorkel. Did the vegemite lid work, yes it took a bit of the sound away and made no difference to the power of the fuel consumption. ( but then a 2.8 litre hilux is low on power to start with) Would it work on a Prado I don't know, but it may pay to talk to Safari if you are sick of the noise.

                  Re: Safari Snorkel intake noise

Every 4x4 i have had (before the Prado) has had a snorkel and you never really get away from the induction noise. I am a grease monkey by trade and to me a good induction noise on the fourbie warms the heart like the twin system on my HQ Monaro...

Just gotta swindle the funds out of the accountant now for a snork for the 95!

                    Re: Safari Snorkel intake noise

You can get a uni filter dust cover that goes across the ram head face which quetens them down a bit. Personally i love the noise

                      Hi Guys,
I have had a Safari snorkle fitted recently to my 120 D4D and didn't really notice the induction sound until I just fitted a K&N reusable air filter and now I sure can hear her suck that air in. I got the K&N filter at repco for a steal at $120 and never have to replace it.

Has any one got any feed back on the K&N filter as it seems to let heaps and I mean heaps more air though
                      Cheers

Just remember to regularly clean it, esp in dusty driving. They let more air in, but get clogged up quick too!

I also had an issue with what sounded like induction/ rattle, check the drain bung under the air box is this isn't fully sealed you will get a bit of noise, not sure why but that's what my safari snorkel was doing it until I re sealed the bung

If you replace the air-ram with a Donaldson pre-cleaner it will get rid of the intake noise...

Hi All, Before fitting the Donaldson have a close look at their reccommendations, they used to advise that the pre-cleaner was not suitable for speeds over 80 kmph. Not sure on the current model. I had one on a Patrol and if used in rain over 80ks the bowl used to fill with water, not what you need in the air intake.
                              Cheers
