  • Just bought a diesel prado '04'

    Hey guys,
i have just bought an completely standard 04 manual prado. would appreciate some feedback on gaining some grunt. As you know they dont go too bad but i think there is a few 'flat' spots i need to iron out. I have spoken to some guys who say their in the know, but i thought i would run it by you all. Without spending thousands they said to add snorkel, boost controller/guage and add a k+n filter first. If this is not desirable to then add a new exhaust..I would really appreciate your thoughts on this and apologise in advance if there are already posts on this subject. I have searched but cant find exactly what im looking for.. Cheers Tubby

I added a DP Chip to my 04, primarily for towing...... huge difference.

Re: Just bought a diesel prado '04'

Chip for bottom end performance improvement - $1000-$1500
        Exhaust/dump pipe for mid range/top end improvement - $1000
Filter for a little more top end - $100
        Shuttle/bleed style boost controller - $50 (1 Bar/14.7psi MAX)

Add EGR block (Free), Boost gauge ($150) and EGR gauge ($120) for monitoring/peace of mind.

Expect 30% improvement with these mods.

You could go further with bigger intercooler, more boost and custom tuning for a bit more power but with the mods I've already mentioned you are at the limit of a standard 1kz as the turbo is quite small and the head can only flow so much.

All the information is on the forum, it will just take a bit of searching and reading, it won't all be in one thread.

Just the DP Chip at this time, Would love to do the exhaust...... when finance allows. But I find I now have all the pulling power & performance I need.

Re: Just bought a diesel prado '04'

Why would a snorkel make a difference? Sounds like it would make a very minor difference, if any, compared to the costs of other mods.

Re: Just bought a diesel prado '04'

Amtz - there is plenty of info re the effect of snorkels if you search google. I can't remember the technical term for what happens, but basically the snorkel improves the 'quality' of the intake air (i.e., it is cooler and cleaner), as well as the quantity of air available. I have read an article, can't remember where, which fitted a snorkel to the petrol prado. They tested its effects in a controlled environmet by running the car in a workshop on dyno rollers to control for wind differences etc. They compared this to the standard intake and there was a definite improvement in power etc as evidence by torque curves etc.

They didn't test a diesel but went so far as to suggest that the improvement is better than for petrol given the rather small air intake allocated to the diesel already. But, i'd be interested to know what the diesel owners here say as I am considering fitting one. I have read articles where they say there is no difference too. Go figure....

                Cheers -

From my reading I would be thinking an exhaust and a chip are what will give you the best improvement. They are officially on my wish list as I too have the 1kz motor.

A snorkel is gonna do SFA to improve your performance on road.

That is the first time someone has actually put that in words re snorkel giving sfa performance increase..food for thought but all the posts and threads i have read on snorkels tell the opposite...im still pro snorkel!! The more cool air being forced into the motor the better

You should read PP some more, I'm sure I've got a few anti snorkel = performance increase posts.

I'm with Madcore; A snorkel is a protection modification, not a performance one.

Agreed... A snorkel is for protection not performance.

However good clean air is always beneficial but the snorkel is definately NO turbo, you've already got one of those as standard
