Gday all, just seeing what peoples opinions are on whether its worth reconditioning my engine, gearbox and diff's? With all new turbo diesels having dpf's and a lot of complaints regarding them was thinking its better to keep the car I have and just giving it a re vamp . was interested to see if anyone else has done this and what the expected cost might be. Any advice is appreciated. Cheers

From my perspective it’s a matter of how old your vehicle is and whether you’re going to hang on to it for a while. Relative to the vehicles age, is the old girl getting tired? after the rebuild, what else is going to break, what will it cost? I’d imagine the gear box and engine recon won’t be cheap albeit still cheaper than a new vehicle. Id be considering whether you’d recoup the rebuild costs if you sold it. The law of diminishing returns would suggest not. I understand every hobby /passion has an unrecoverable expense, however perhaps it may be a better idea selling your vehicle as is and spending that money and the rebuild costs on a low Km pre Dpf model. You’’re never going to recover the coin you put into it on an older vehicle regardless of how flash it is.Last edited by Pradosaur; 10-07-2018, 08:05 AM.2018 VX Prado

Interior is in good nic and so is the body, its a 2006 turbo diesel and done 250k I've re done breaks ,clutch and about to do suspension . just don't like or trust dpf system as we got one in a Forrester and has been nothing but a pain in the back side. Was told by a mechanic that would be better to spend money on the car I have than to spend 30k on another used one.
