  • Fuel Tank Setup?

I have done about 1,000km in my Prado (V6 Petrol). I had originally fueled it right up (180L).

How does the fuel guage work?

My interpretation from the manual is that the guage will drop to empty (?) and then it will pump the fuel from the sub tank across and the guage will go back up to full and the 90L light will come on?

Is this what happens - or does it trickle feed it accross?

Currently the light has not come on and I am down a bit below the 1/4 of a tank. It seems that my fuel economy is too good to be true?? (Assuming I used the whole 1st tank of 90L on the 1,000km - that equates to 9L/100km ??).

Am I missing something or will I just run out of fuel?

ok.. the main tank uses the top half of the fuel gauge... when it gets just under half way, it goes back to full, and the 90L light comes on. Then the last 90L uses the whole fuel gauge..

      Thanks.

Maybe it isn't reading 1/4 at the moment? I will check tonight. Maybe it is about to kick over.

        From my observations:

When fuel tank is full each 1/4 section of fuel will last you around 300km

When one fuel tank is empty the gauge will go back up and 90L light will
come up. From there on each 1/4 section is around 150 km....

I've noticed that the second tank seems to go quite a bit faster than the first.

Also, when the second tank empty light comes on, there is around 30L left.

The fuel tank setup is different on the 90 series & 120 series.

In discussions it should be made clear what vehcile you have, lest you get data about the other vehicle (since both have V6 & both havd TD engines).

120 series transfers from aux to main. Engine runs from main tank.
90 series runs the engine from the selected tank.

Fuel return lines are another kettle of fish tho.

Not quite empty (1/4 or there abouts from memory), then transfers.

11KM/L (9l/100) is a little optomistic - usually about 10KM/L, or just under.

                Guys,
my understanding from discussions with Toyota is there is no transfer capability on the 120. They explained that the tanks are seperate but selection is now automatic. Therefore, when the sub tank is sensed empty, the system automatically changes over everything via valves, including fuel return to the main tank.

I have a drawing of how it works on my hard drive but I don't know how to put it on to this data base. If any one would like to a copycould you please explain how to get it on to the data base or I will email it to them.
But how it works is the fuel is suck from the main tank to the fuel pump, the fuel that is not used is pumped back to the main tank and passes through a jet pump which sucks the fuel out of the sub tank until the sub tank is empty, when the sub tank is empty the 90 lt light comes on.The engine never uses fuel from the sub tank.

I filled up as soon as the 90 litre light came on and it took 96 litres.

I believe the tanks are split 93lt - 87lt. so 96 probably took in account the filler hose down to the tank.

That does sound about right. I've had mine out to 740km before switching tanks and I doubt I would quite get 740km from the second tank.

If the second tank accommodates more than 90L, is this a sure sign that the bowser is out of calibration, instead?
