  • Fuel Usage/Fuel Gauge issues - help

Ok, so Im convinced there is something going on with my prado and was wondering if anyone has had similar issues and what I can do to resolve it.
Its a petrol V6, so I already know the economy isn't fantastic, but its also a grande so it gives me the average fuel consumption which is around 12.8l on the highway and around 14.2l around town which sounds about right - give or take.

Thing is, I can't get more than 900k's to a tank.

Having said that, last 2 fills have been 148l and 137l respectively - so one would think that there is plenty left in reserve - I have been refilling shortly after the fuel light comes on.

So I am imagining that I have a fair bit left in the tank when it is indicating that its empty & it seems looking at other threads others say it should have about 20l left when the light comes on.

Thing is, when I do a full fill - meaning wait till pump clicks off and then try again(usually fuel will bubble out at me so I am thinking its pretty full), but on the gauge it never sits on full when it should be.
And my fuel gauge can be extremely erratic, ill get in and it will be say half a tank, drive a few k's, park it and then a few hours later when I get back in its sitting on a quarter.

Has anyone had issues with the fuel senders & would it be this that's causing the dramas or do I need to start looking at the gauge on the dash first?

You could try removing the senders from both tanks and cleaning the rheostats and wipers with some fine wet and dry.

        Hmm interesting.
Have you tried running it dry(assuming you have a V6)?
I think that's my next port of call to try and figure out if its actually the fuel gauge or the fact that its not taking a full fill.

I did read elsewhere that someone else had an issue with the breathers blocking with dirt etc and couldn't get a full fill in due to back pressure, but havent had a chance to crawl under and have a look.

I think that may end up being what I will do if the above doesn't work.
