I have noticed that my recently purchased 04/V6 Prado has green coolant, not the genuine red Toyota product. Are there other compatible coolants which aren't red in colour? I've noticed Nulon produces a red coolant which is readily available but am unsure about suitability of green coloured coolant. This vehicle has a full service history with Toyota and was recently serviced by Toyota. Interestingly, nothing was said about the coolant or the need to change. Should I get it flushed and replaced or does Toyota just use whatever is available at the dealership? I know this tends to be the case with "genuine toyota oil" - the brand varies from workshop to workshop. :

If it where me; I'd flush it and put in the genuine Toyota long life red coolant. It's doesn't cost all that much and is a very good product. I'd also question the service manager regarding the green coolant.... one would hope it meets the recommended standard (as stated in the owners and service manual)

I think you are probably right. I'm hoping the green coolant was a HOAT type as specified in the manual, but do not want to take any risks. I've always been keen DIY'er because of less than positive experiences with certain dealerships with a number of makes of vehicles. I'm sure there are some excellent service centres out there but after the green coolant episode and a previous "genuine" Auto Trans. service resulting in an overfilled transmission with generic fluid, I'll buy some of the toyota pink coolant and do it myself. :x

Stick to the Toyota coolant as stated it is a good product , I have serviced cylinder heads and it is not hard to work out what heads have had a well marketed but not very good coolant in the system as to the heads that have had the Toyota coolant .Comment

As has already been said, the Toyota product is very good. I would not use anything else in my current Prado either. I've worked part time in a local auto store for years and cannot recall a single bad word said about it. I could not say the same about some other products I have used in non-toyota vechicles. Make sure you flush "all" the old stuff out. Might be worth getting a power flush to ensure no residue from the green stuff is left behind to contaminate the new Toyota coolant.
