  • Best premium fuel

Elf is the best, but you dont want to be paying around $4 a litre do you?

Apart from that the testing that I have been involved in shows BP to have the highest (Averaged) octane stuff.
Its getting harder and harder to get AVgas anymore (130 octane+), so BP98 + Octane booster is the best for high performance cars.

I run BP 98 straight in the Prado, and with an octane booster in my supercharged 5.7 litre.
The rally cars (WRX/Evos) are run on 98 as well. (Usually with a booster). Or if the sponsors are particuarly favourable its Elf!

    Piggy,

Do you think there's a difference in running 95 v 98 octane premium in our Prados?

The higher the octane the better (and cleaner) the Burn.

You will find about a 5-6% better fuel economy if you run higher octane all the time as well.

You should see the inside of one of my engines we pulled the head off recently, it has been running Av gas for last 3000 kms, it was cleaner than my kitchen! All from a hot clean burning fuel.

I run BP98 in my 1994 Daihatsu Charade (seriously !!).

I was amazed at the extra power (5th gear @ 80kph through the Sydney harbour tunnel northbound, when previously it struggled in 4th) ... and the extra fuel economy.

I reckon on open highway runs, I have got up to 20% better economy from the car (600km rather than 500km from a 42L tank of fuel - although typically I end up putting in only 36L or so to fill it). Most of that is probably from the extra power meaning I don't have to floor it as much to get anywhere with the 1.3L engine !! City driving, 5% better economy is probably more accurate. Either way, I reckon it pays for itself.

Fortunately, 36L of BP98 doesn't cost that much really ... and since we live near the train station and I work from home, the car only gets filled up once every 2-3 months anyway !!!

I shudder to think how much it would cost to fill a 180L Prado tank with BP98 !!

(PS. got the wife to sit in the VX Prado on display at the Sydney Caravan and Camping show yesterday ... I've got the thumbs up on buying one - if we can decide on a colour ... but I have to pay cash, and I have to take her on a long OS trip first *sigh*. If things go well - I'm aiming for Christmas this year )

Top gear had some figures on 3 different cars. first was run of the mill shopping car next was slightly hotted up and last was race type car.
They tested 3 fuels standard unleaded bp ultimate and shell optimax.
the first car made no diff. in power output, and i think the second car also made no diff. but the last car made 10 more horse on bp and 20 more horse on the shell optimax fuel. Engines need to have good comp ratio or high boost pressures to make any differances in power output .A fuel with high octane rating means the fuel is less likely to pre ignite under comperssion stroke thus allowing for a more agressive ignition curve, the high octane fuel is less flamable under pressure then low octane fuel.My race car runs on methanol fuel which will only ignite in high comp engines and like Team piggy my heads come off the engine clean as a whistle.
              Cheers Phil.

I will try and find this episode on you tube or lime wire.

Was playing on the Dyno today with a Nismo equipped Turbo XR6 falcon and it was running out of fuel, as in surging it was so low! (Standard Unleaded).
So we decided to fill the tank with BP 98.

Result on Dyno with same air temp, same eng Temp, no changes at all apart from octane increase in fuel type.

Standard fuel: 302 Rear wheel KW

BP 98 fuel: 314 Rear wheel KW

                3.75% power increase at wheels..

:P And yes, its not exactly a standard XR6!

Have had good results from Mobil Synergy and BP Ultimate for my 500hp Commodore.

Recently filled up with Caltex Vortex 98 with good results.

Have steered clear of Shell ever since Optimax was available. My engine pinged badly. Will not try Shell again, shopper dockets notwithstanding.

Thought I should mention, I originally voted BP Ultimate as that's what I've always used. But I recently switched to United Boost98 which contains ethanol. I have experienced roughly the same to slightly better consumption figures on this fuel - but the main advantage is price, it's on average 10 cents per litre cheaper - that works out at about $15-18 per tank - well worth changing for.

                      Drew.

We have had tests done at the race workshop recently, Mobil 8000 has dropped behind in octane. BP98+ is still leading currently (As of 2 weeks ago).

I buy BP first, Mobil 2nd, Shell 3rd.

I have been runing the Mobil 8000 for the last 6 months or so since making the switch from regular unleaded. I was a bit skeptical at first but I did notice a difference in performance and the log book shows about 10% better economy (14.3l v 12.8l per hundred). Have tried BP98 as well with similar results but the BP servos around the area aren't as convenient or don't discount quite as much so it is Mobil 8000 for the moment.
