    Interesting read tonight.

I have spent a few hours this afternoon trawling around Toyota dealerships in Sydney attempting to get a "good deal" on a GXL D4D Prado. Now I know that the D4D is in huge demand due to the fact that I have been made aware of it by this forum. Today I went to two dealers who both had 1 (each dealer) GXL D4D sitting in their parking lots for sale. Both were unsold, I checked.

Now in each case I found the salesmen friendly enough when first approached as I asked the on road price. I was quote full retail, fair enough. When asked about any discounting on these vehicles the air suddenly went cold and frosty. Then I got the spiel about the "infinate" waiting time for new orders. Nobody buys something from a car salesman or woman , if he/she cannot tell you when it will be delivered. Needless to say they wouldnt budge at all on price.

I left both dealerships without even being offered a brochure, having my name and number taken down etc. This has never happened to me before when I have been looking for a new car. Last of all I then drove to a third dealership, pulled up outside (they had two Grande D4D's sitting in the parking lot) and thought Im not going to be looked down apon again today so I drove off. Needless to say I can bargin hard when I have to, given the opportunity.

Hate to say it I have even gone back to researching Pajeros for god sake!!!

I was determined to put my money where my heart was today and finally buy/order one of these things, as you can see it left a bad taste in my mouth.

    My 10 cents worth :?

      Sorry

Hoppy50, One thing is for sure, DON'T DO IT...............
You did not come and see us thats for sure....I know that because we certainly don't have any unsold ones....lucky them.
PradoGXLV6 can also give you my details, unfortunately we do not have any in stock that are unsold....but never the less I will be happy to help you with any information if you require it.
Good Luck but buy a Prado if you want long term happiness.

Havent you heard the one about letting your emotions control your spending?

My brother did that a year ago, and bought the Pajero as well because of a snarky salesperson at Toyota...
6 months later when he sold it (to buy a prado) he lost somewhere "above" 12k.. (wont tell me the real figure)...

I would suggest sitting back for a few weeks and trying different dealers and mayeb take advice from here to go in calm and work on making a decent deal.

When i brought my Prado D4D VX at the beginning of the year i brought mine as an ex demo only done 1000km and as an ex demo the price is approx 20% off retail which is around the same as toyota staff rate and fleet rate. Where the Dealer makes the profit in with this type of deal is in the rebates given at the end of the month from Toyota NZ.

There isnt a shortage of D4D prado here in NZ just the opposite there are a few ex demos for sale as well as a lot of Jap import new D4D from Japan. Apparently there was a cancelled order for Jap spec Prado D4Ds from a 3rd world country and quite a few NZ importers took advantage and landed them in NZ for around $53k brand new and selling them for $58-63k.

Jap spec Prado TX D4D are 4speed auto (NZ spec is 5speed auto), no rear air, no stability control, no DAC and no radio. same spec as your GXL but with a sunroof and climate air.

heres a link as an example.

                Hello Hoppy,

We have just ordered the August build D4D GXL Prado from a great dealer (not our local either!) in Sydney. We don't know when it will be delivered, probably Christmas with all the setbacks, but I don't care, it's worth the wait. If you are interested in the dealer pm me and am happy to pass it on. They were recommended to us and I've never been happier!

As a potential vehicle buyer, I certainly didn't expect to read something this interesting on a Prado forum... I'll leave my ignorance well alone from here on.

Firstly, a big thanks to Richo and other great contributors of the thread (you know who you are! ).

Of all the years I've spent browsing automotive forums I have rarely come across a thread as informative and incisive as this.

To Hoppy, I feel your grief mate. Keep trying as I'm sure the good members here will happily guide you to Prado happiness.

Me, I'm kinda lucky as my dad-in-law works for Toyota and I can get a somewhat reasonable deal on a Prado... the only dilemmas are whether to go petrol or D4D; and what range do I consider - the cheapest version or the luxo? As it will likely be a privately owned vehicle, I'm tempted to go the cheapest route (GX) plus one or two options, as you can never beat the strength of depreciation.

Thanks again to all for sharing your purchasing nous with us hopefuls.

                    Salesgirl,
You certainly provoked some entertaining reading over the weekend. Well done and welcome. Good to see the other side of things, we may yet see some comments from the service side ??

Eight months ago I had to make the choice Prado or Pajero (I still claim that the Pajero is a good product. "I know wash my mouth out")
At the time the Pajero was in short supply, but like Hoppy 50, I was not going to sign the dotted line until the wife & myself had at least taken one for a test drive. Tried three Mitsubishi dealers, gave all my contact details & guess what? Eight months later am now the proud owner of a Prado & yet to drive a Pajero. No follow up at all from Mitsubishi.

On the other hand two Toyota dealers went out of their way to make the sale, very little arm twisting to get a "hard to turn down deal".
I ended up getting it from a Victorian dealer that has made the top Toyota dealer for the last four years. (for me it has been easy to see why)

As Mav pointed out, if everyone is happy that is all that really matters.

Hoppy 50 If you haven't already, best try Salesgirl for a deal.

Foot note: Salesgirl, I have just noticed that a earlier posting referring to you (from someone else) has gone missing   (just stirring)

                    Cheers

Just thought I'd put add my views into this thread.

Firstly, from my perspective, there is very little difference between the Paj and the Prado. I had an NP Paj until last Friday and am waiting on a Prado D4D.

I have pulled a few Prado's out of various difficult spots and been pulled out by the same Prado's from others.

So why did I chose a Prado this time? Well mostly because I wanted a diesel and the Prado was noticably quieter. The other reason was that my wife liked the feel of the steering better. (It's lighter than the Paj's)

As far as the buying experience is concerned, I'd have to say I had good experience at the Mitsubishi dealers (x3) in my area, and variable experience with the Toyota dealers (x3). The one I finally bought from - Toyota Nunawading VIC has been very good. (Note: All were the fleet sales staff.)

Coming back to the original purpose of this thread, my dealer informed me last week that my Prado which was due for delivery in early Sept. is now delayed and won't come until at least Oct. Given that I have now returned my Paj to the leasing company, I am naturally a very unhappy camper.

I just for all of us that Toyota Japan, allocates more of the production to AUS.

                              Cheers P1

                                Hi P1

Just had a thought (unusal for me :P ).Are you getting the update model. If originaly getting delivery of vehicle in september, that says to me that the build date would be July which is the last of the old spec.Seeing that they have changed the delivery dates it may pay to ask for the new model

                                regards Rob
