  • Don't lose your keys

Lost one of my master keys the other day bush walking, couldn't find it any where after looking for two and a half hours. Lucky i was pretty close to home, anyway. Cost $280 for a blank from Toyota at trade price, then i had to get it cut. I went to a local locksmith with what i thought was a good reputation and got the key cut. Then i had to book into toyota so they can reprogram the keys (need both sets for this). While i waiting the service guy comes in and says your new wont turn in the door lock or ignition barrell :x . Lovelly, so back to the locksmith, they look at the key and come to the conclusion that the guy that cut the key took too much meat of the key, its now useless. By now i'm  and locksmith is saying to me i will need a new key, I tell them i'm not paying the $280 for a new key, oh ok, any way in the end after some talking they replaced the key, cut it properly (different locksmith this time) and apologised profusely. In the end it took me about five hours of stuffing around.

Conclusion, DON'T LOSE YOUR KEYS :!:

Sorry to hear about your stuff around Matty, at least it got sorted in the end.

I have similar advice for not loosing your keys - I was at the snow a few years ago and had the keys to my Subaru stuffed in the top of my pocket. Had a fun time at the bar with family and mates and staggered back to our room in the wee hours of the morning. Next day we got ready to go driving and couldn't find the car key anywhere. We traced our footsteps from the night before but it had been belting snow since we hit the hay and it's a 200 metre outdoor walk between the bar and our cabin! Couldn't find them anywhere - and I didn't have a spare.

So my wife and I had to borrow her brother's Daihatsu Feroza and drive 7 hours each way back the the Blue Mountains from the Snowies to get our spare key. By the time we got back home we had 2 hours sleep and drove back down had a coffee and then drove back to Sydney with our car. I spent 20 out of 24 hours behind the wheel of a car. Needless to say I was pretty tired at work on the Monday.

I left my contact details with the lodge where we stayed in case they found my key. 6 weeks later I gave up and started the process of getting a new key from Subaru. The prices were similarly high, thankfully the day before I placed the order for the key I received a phone call from the lodge saying they'd found my key when some of the snow has melted! Lucky!

So now I have a spare key hidden on my car in case I loose my key when I'm out bush somewhere. Can you imagine dropping your key when you are on a bushwalk a thousand kilometres from home??!

A few years ago I had to get some keys cut for my BMW bike. I went to the local 'Smithy' and had several exact keys cut from the code number. He had all the key codes for all manufacturers stored on computer and only had to load the blank into the machine and voila! All the ridges and valleys were perfect as per a brand new key.

I avoid those places that cut from your key, as you will always get a copy of a worn key, and those cheap (noisy) machines are easy to misload the blank, with results like Matty experienced.

        Hi ALL
What we do at work is get cheap blank cut first try it before
cutting the remote key saves buggering a expensive remote first.
