    Thanks for that Dark Horse.

Did you happen to find the table of costs for services mentioned in last page?

I think it is pretty accurate on a stock vehicle being driven "sensibly"

on my very short commute to work which i average around 22km/h i get around 18L/100..(about a 3-5 minute drive)

i just did a trip to the coast, and on the 45km drive in a 100 zone, i averaged 12L/100kms.. and that was a spritely drive..

on my last trip to gladstone (140kms) i averaged 11.2L/100kms.. and that was with passing trucks, and sitting at just under 110Km/h.

at the time i got the prado, the old 3.0 didnt appeal to me, i was coming from a 2.4L 4cyl 4runner, and i wanted something with more power.

i would probably go with the diesel if i was buying now. But i am still VERY happy with my prado, and since i dont pay for fuel anyway, give me that V6 Power!! 8)

One other factor that the article missed was the V6 needs a timing belt replacement at around 100,000km whereas the D4D doesn't incur this cost during servicing.

What's the cost of the service incl timing belt replacement? If the wife's '95 Corolla is any guide, the service cost was north of $1,000 (they also replaced the water pump, which they claim was faulty, ha ha how convenient !!! ) so I'd expect the cost to be greater for the V6.

It probably was faulty, I had to have my water pump replaced on my Corolla as well. It was an 89 model and it lasted about 7 years before needing replacing the damn thing just seized up.

It would be interesting to see if they factered the timing belt into the service cost.

Im with you Matt the old 3L was the only one about when I bought mine, I wasnt overly struck on the old 3L motor so went with the 4L, the old 3L in auto form was a bit lacking at highway speeds, wheres the 4L just goes when booted hard.

                        Gday Gents.
I may be wrong and will stand corrected if i am, but i was under the impression the 4.0 V6 does not have a timing belt to be replaced. I think it may be a chain.

                        Cheers

Fuel consumption wise i am getting 16's around Brisbane which i thought was great compared to the Jeep at 19's.

                              Sorry guys. ops:

I'm glad you corrected me. I thought all Toyota petrol engines were interference engines. Glad to know the 4L V6 has the chain.

Therefore, the D4D wouldn't really be more economical to run compared to the V6 when the price premium of the diesel option and maintenance costs are factored in over, say, the life of the vehicle.

                              Cheers
