  • Grande 90l sub tank: how does it work?

    Hi
I dont have my car very long, but it has two fuel tanks, both 90l. It has a gree light that says "90L" and it only has one guage.

So I emptied my wallet and filled until both were full. The guage showed full, with the "90L" green light off.
I drove around, and when the guage hit round about half way mark, the guage shot up to full and the "90L" green light came on.

Is this normal? I would have thought that the main tank should be empty, and then the sub tank should come into affect?

    Can anyone please help

hey mate , i have an 03 and this appears to be normal . mine does the same and i know another bloke who,s late model lexus 470 does the same thing . it appears it takes from either tank to balance out the car . might be a good idea but some times it can give you a scare . you have to keep an eye on it . unfortunately you probably don't have a range computer which will scare you even more if your in the outback .
03 grande v6 , with added stuff that makes it go places . RTFM people !

This is well covered in several threads, search the archive (use Google though).

What you have described is normal, the sub tank gets used first and level is indicated using only half the gauge scale. The main tank is used second, it's level is indicated using the full gauge scale. The "90" light indicates which tank you are on. Low fuel light comes on with 15-20lts left.

without wanting to sound rude and not meaning it that way, its also explained in the car manual fairly well. its probably a good spot to find the answer you need

You are right, the manual is not that clear in relation to your question
No where in the manual does it state why the guage shifts from half way and I also have been curious so thanks for beating me to the punch.
              Good question.
