  • 4wd trailers

    I would like to know if anyone has a 4wd trailer, if so do you have any advice on what features/requirements I should include. We are expecting our first child, so the back seat will now be required, thus the need for a trailer. So far I have the following requirements:
    * same tyres as the prado
    * 60l of water
    * gas bottle holder

    Thanks Ben

      Hey Guys,
      Two or so years ago I purchased a Deluxe Trackabout trailer and although you don't say whether you are requiring the tent part, the trailer is great too and may be something of a guide.
      Extended draw bar so you can put a box on the bar. We aslo have a metal pole box as well.
      While many trailers are gal plated but this can warp the floor quite alot. Mine is zinc plated then welded together. It requires that you keep the paint up to it but with hammer coat paint it looks great without too much effort.
      Pay attention to the draw bars. Some are getting up to 100 mm or 50 mm with a bar strengther. I have seen three draw bar system and this would take a lot of weight. The top of the line Trackabouts have this.
      50 millimetre axle with off road ALKO brakes. If you keep the weight down you can get away with no brakes, but I have found it great for parking at a camp site.
      MAkes sure that the section between the wheel guard and the front and the guard and the rear is filled out to allow gas bottle, fuel, extra water. or maybe a battery box to be installed. That space can be invaluable.
      A good hitch. You will argue with many about which one and the ease or otherwise of use, compared with the articulation etc. I have an AT35 and it works well, articulates very well, but with all fully articulating hitches it can be tricky get it to connect but it get easy with practice.
      Tyres are not an issue really. Just tell the manufacturer what you need.
      Captured rebound leaf springs with greasable shackles.
      I do not run shocks but some do. I have driven half way around Oz, across the top, with this rig loaded to 1000 kilos. Not a prob.
      Water. Underbody tank is the go. Think thru where you would like to put the pump. Dont forget the vent and use a thick sponge as a filter. If you slit it down the centre but not all the way, placed over the tube and zip tired off, it makes a good filter. Essential for the outback of you don't want dirty water.
      Hope that is a start.
