  • Injector problem causes re-build of engine

We have bought a 2nd hand 06/07 Prado and it had 88,000km on the clock. Since we have had it we have just gone over 100,000km and while drivng it lost power and blew smoke out the exhaust and stopped. It has been picked up that there was a hole in number 1 cylinder head caused by injector spray pattern fault. We have been lucky enough to have extended warranty and this has covered almost a total engine rebuild. While in the workshop it has also been discovered that there is a fault in the turbo.

Our question is if anyone else has had this problem and what are our rights to warrenty on this work that has been carried out. Parts put into the car are apparently only covered for 20,000km or 1 year which is a bit of a concern to us.

If anyone else has any advice or similar things happening to there Prados we would love your input.

    Cheers

Thanks for that Adam, will check them out. Just concerned that we will be not covered if something else goes wrong in the future. Going to try and make phone calls and get more warranty.

My 2007 D4D with 99000km made a strange rattle noise under the bonnet and started pumping thick white smoke out the exhaust after Mothers day lunch recently. It eventually cleared and we drove off.
The car had started making the cold start rattle when the tempurature dropped below 10 degrees in the morning this winter.

I took it into Toyota and they did a cold start test and confirmed that the injectors needed replacing.
I had my eye on a Petrol 150 series and traded to that before having to fork out $4500 in injector replacement.

WOW is all I can say!!!!
You can get replacement reconditioned diesel injectors from several places for 1/8th of that cost.

Not for a D4D you wont, they are non serviceable, not like your 1KZ in your prado, they can be reco'd or a full set of new ones for under 1k, the D4D or any other of the later diesels are extremely expensive to replace injectors, wait till you do a pump in a D4D, 5g plus............The 1KZ in your prado might not be as powerfull as the new D4D but boy I know which one Id rather be paying for should some thing go wrong, been a few turbo issues as well with the D4D including the hiace vans that are running the D4D, my neighbours went at just over 100k he traded it in, was going to cost him over 5k to fix it, they didnt pick it when he traded it at another dealers, luckily......Regards Steve

Cooma diesel now service the pumps for much less ($1200) than the 1KZ pump($2450)
                check out ebay for prices

Injectors can now be picked up for around $450 - $600 + fitting.

It isn't as daunting as it was 1-2 years ago.

I had to have an engine rebuild cos a glow plug tip came off and as you have been told, Toyota will warranty the parts for 1 year but their workmanship for life.

I have a similar story that i would like to share. I experienced poor stating and our friends at toyota diagnosed a faulty injector. They removed the injectors and at the same time did a compression test and found that no one cylinder was below spec. Not wanting to go any further it was all reassembled and then did not run. I towed it home. Bought new injectors from the uk and after a while got the car running nicely. The reason that it did not run was one of the plugs to the fule pump had been "disconnected". Whilst replacing the injectors i was horrified to find an incredible amount of loose carbon laying around the tappet area. This stuff was like black sandy grit. i removed what i could but was concerned that some had gone down into the sump. The carbon came from the removal of the injectors. Once I had the car running io took it up to Toyota to trim the injectors. This entailed entering the injector trim codes into the ECU. That done we noticed a knock coming form the engine. After some further investigation they found that the knock was coing from no 1 cylinder and recommmended that the head and sump come off to invesitgiate ( for a fee of $1500) i took the prado home and after removing the front axle and hydraulic steering pulled the sump off. Horror of horrors i found the rest of the carbon stuck to the strainer of the oil pick up. Big ends were scored suggesting oil starvation but not enough dmage to justify the knock. Another weekend later off came the head and oh dear. No 1 piston has started siezing.
The moral of this story is make sure that if you have injectors replaced ensure all the carbon is removed or better still engine is flushed out and baby sump removed to check strainer is clear.
i am now about to embak on an engine rebuild as i have honed the cylinders and there is stilla score mark which will have adverse effects in the long run.
So i hope that you learn a thing or two from this exercise and I will keep you updated on my progress with the rebuild. The big question is whether any one has a link to an off shore supplier for toyota parts. Love to hear from you.
