  • Power stearing pump noisy

Has anyone had a power steering pump fail or get really noisy?

My truck has done 78,000km and now have been told the pump needs to be replaced at a cost of $2000. I have an extended warranty luckerly as the vehicle is more than 5 years old. The service centre said its the first time they have seen a steering pump fail.

    Regards

    Doug,
I go along with what the service centre said as to first time, but I am sure you could get the pump rebuilt for a lot less cost.
As you said, having a extended warranty this should not be an issue.
There is a small possibility that it is sucking in air from a loose return line, in turn causing the oil to aerate ?

      powewr steering issues

Gday all, Im chasing a power steering issue atm.
Got waaaay to excited smashing donuts in a skid pan on the weekend and after lost power steering. Revving it up gives more drive on tight turns but loud as.
Listening under car thought it was the pump only.
Pulled it out last night and stripped it down for inspectyion. Some minor galling on the rotor plate which i cleaned up. Also some wear on the faces as youd expect.
      Id say its been overheated.
Havent followed the lines but is that finned heatsink mounted up under the car for the steering fluid to cool down? A gut full of mud will compromise that.
Anyway after cleaning up the pump internals and refitting its still bad.
Thinking it could be a blown bypass/overpressure valve which I think is in the steering rack.

Anyone else out there had this? I see exchange steering racks are readily available so assuming this is a relatively common problem/?

08 diesel auto 150 kays mostly not nice ones.
new mounts for sreeting rack 2000kays ago..

Keen to change pump and rack and fit external cooler up front. Anyone done this for the steering?

Im not overly nice to this car so when I fix a system I like to upgrade it.

      Cheers.

Yes, on a 1KZ, but the same principle. Find the last metal pipe in the return line to the reservoir, it usually has a barb and hose to the tank. Extend this through a magnefine filter out to a standard auto trans oil cooler fixed in front of the aircon condenser then back to the tank. Fluid will last almost forever, as will the seals in the rack and the vanes in the pump, because they are not being cooked.
