How fit are you, hand winching is bloody hard work. If you don't venture off road that often I doubt the need for a winch is likely to arise, maxtrax would be a cheaper and easier option that would serve you much better than a hand winch. Not needing a winch assumes you have a bit of an idea about 4wdriving, correct tyre pressures, assesing the situation before you get to a point you need a winch etc.
If you lack experience, join a club or do a 4wd course before venturing too far off road.

Hello Ilovediesel,
A hand winch is more flexible than an electric one as it can pull sideways and backwards as well as pull someone else out without you going too close and joining the other bod in the deep stuff, but they are very slow and hard work and heavy to carry around. I have one and it has taught me to avoid getting stuck at all costs, I tend to be conservative and look at all options and routes before committing to possible winching effort.
Buy a good snatch strap if you expect to have another vehicle anywhere handy. It will be much easier to carry and use when required.
regards
Ross

We have one from Repco, have not used it yet. Should try it out just to see some time. Was a better option than new bull bar, suspension up grade and duel battery, just to have a winch up from for when we finally get stuck. Mind you I'd like to do the mod's they are just not in the budget at the moment.Chris220220 Finally a Prado owner
