  • Key Code on lock barrel

Since the Toyo dealership didnt provide me with a key code tag and havent recorded it on their data base the 'Lack of Service Department' said to remove the barrel and it will be printed on the case somewhere

I'm assuming it is this one stamped on the side in the right hand pic.

There are two other numbers cast on the case and shaft (see below)

Anyone else had to do this before or know which number it is?

I would say its the 31?5 #Toyota should have a record of the key # on their computer if you give them the VIN #

      Thanks for your reply raydes.
It'd be great if it was that simple and was one of the first things I tried. You'd think it wouldn't be that hard huh.

I phoned a few Toyota places but they either

      - don't know what I'm talking about and I had to explain it to them - she was on about the radio code and I had to explain three times what I was talking about. She spoke to someone else and they couldn't work it out.

      - refused, or

      - (and this one's a cracker) spoke to the dealership where I purchased the car, and after getting passed on from person to person he said he could do it but it would cost me $75 for answer because he had to go into some data base over east - which involves them pressing a button on a computer AND is only giving me the info they were meant to fill in when I bought the vehicle. Then he said or you can pull out the lock on the driver's door and get it from there, which is what I've done... but now there's more than one number on there.

Choice eh. So I just need to know which of these numbers it is (hoping someone else has been there done that) and hopefully will be on my way to a new key Will let you know how I go in case anyone else ends up in the same spot.

        For what it's worth...

I bought my Prado pre-loved by private sale, and the previous owner gave me spare keys with a small metal tag attached. The metal tag is stamped with 5 digits, which I assume is my key code. Hopefully, only one of your stamped numbers has 5 digits!

I was just visiting a Toyota dealership, in Sydney to pick up some parts for a current project, and asked the question about the #9999 on the lock, and YES, that is the number that a locksmith would use to cut new keys. He also verified it with someone in the workshop.

He said Toyota might be a bit fussier in terms of proof of who you were etc, but said that a locksmith could do it from that number, and confirmed that it was on the Toyota database, not a local dealer database, which again is a simple dealer online enquiry. He implied that any dealer could do it.

After a bit of mucking around I ended up getting A1 locksmiths to get the code of the origanal key and they did this for no charge .Now I can give this code to the ebay lock smith and get a new key.

              A1 reckons
-Toyota dont provide codes with their keys anymore
-Toyota dont stamp Key code numbers on door locks or anywhere else on later models vehicles(not sure on what years)
-Toyota key code numbers are 5 digit and start with 5 or 6
