  • My First Prado.

Hi Guys, after having close to 10 Golf Gti's i picked up my first prado yesterday which is am delighted with, heres the spec.

2005 GXL Manual, Charcoal, full leather, chrome mirrors. The car looks great but need some advice on a few things.

Best place and cost of window tints in Melbourne?
Where can i source and cost of the genuine roof rails(missing)?
Where can i source the middle headrest for the row of seats behind the drivers seat, its missing and the seats are leather?

Also never filled the tank so if you could give me an idea of the cost that would be top class.

Got big plans for this bad boy, starting with the suspension jack up and full ARB rooftent set up.

    Thanks guys

    Nick

If you're going to add a roof top tent, then I would not worry about the factory rails. It reduces the carrying capacity f the roof from 100kg to 80kg. It also reduces the area of the roof rack.

Noobie might have the headrest you require but it may not be leather. A trim specialist should be able to reupholster for you. Or try the wreckers.

If you're talking about the headrest for the 3rd row, then it is stored in the zipper compartment behind the 3rd row right hand seatback.

Firstly the roof rails wont be missing as such as they didnt come standard till the series 2 (when the d4d come out) or unless its a VX or grande (which it isnt) as they were standard on them. You can get them off ebay but I believe there not as good, or you may be lucky where some one has removed them to fit there own style of racks and dont require them anymore. As far as the rear headrest goes if its not in where it belongs and its not in the car then it aint there ?? Unless its the very rear dickie seats your talking about then the headrest may be behind the zipper in the rear dickie seats, as far as fuel goes you have 180L so mutilpy that by the cost of the fuel eg $1.00 a litre (I wish) by 180 would be $180.00 but remember unless its dead empty and you have ran out then it wont take a full 180L maybe 160/170 depending on how low you let it go..Headrest if you cant find it will cost you a small fortune from toyota if you need a new one in the vicinity of $500 and then if its leather then it will cost you on top of that unless the they sell the colour leather you have and its the same that toyota would sell in the grande, unless the leather was put in by some one else after, some times people option them up with leather from the factory. You may need to buy one from a wreckers and get it covered and hopfully can match the colour. If you bought from a dealer then it may come under not road worthy as its a safety thing with out headrest ?? or if you bought from dealer but you have the original owners address in logbook then maybe track down the phone number and ring them and see maybe they have it sitting in there garage, would save you a heap of hassles getting another one for it.........Cheers Steve

Na its not standard on the GXL even in the 150, I've had leather in a few cars now and its not some thing I would pay extra for. If it has it as Im buying second hand then so be it or its standard like on the Kakadu then I would have no choice although unless I win lotto it wont be happenng anyway lol. It has its plus's and minus's for me. I dont like it for extreme steep stuff and your butt wants to keep sliding all the time like it did when we had the grande 95 series T/D, was good to get out of as you just turned your butt around and slid out, and good for cleaning 3 year old spew off, just wipe then I cleaned with leather cleaner and put protection back on, no smell once it was cleaned and dont need to steam cleanit unlike material which holds the smell especially milk lol, but I like the velour for not sliding around on, doesnt crack on the sides like leather does and you dont have to treat it and it doesnt burn your butt on a hot day, use to have to put towel down in the 95 even the sun had come through the side window on the seats (always use a sunshade for the windscreen). I think the leather in the later days in the prados personally isnt as good a quality as earlier. I know a member on here who is anal about looking after his 120 and has leather and already its cracked on the drivers side at for memory 63k so not real good wear (may be a one off) but I dont think so. I had beige leather in the 95 and was a pain in the rear to keep clean on my seat as any dirt mamnaged its way into the fine lines and was near impossible to remove so i would never have beige again, reckon the gray is the most versatile in either leather or velour. Cheers Steve

Thanks for the advice guys, just need to sell my Golf Gti now to allow a few mods, such as a snorkel and a rack for all the camping gear. I had reservations at first about buying such a big car but now i love it and its the best decision i have made in a long time. Nick
