  • Aftermarket Keys and Transponders

I lost my original key. I still have one more original with the metal number plate. Currently using my spare as a main. I sourced two blank keys from the internet, and a used transmitter(transponder) from another Toyota car of the same period from the internet. A couple of questions:

1- Does the original key (metal piece inserted into ignition barrel) have a chip?
2- Should the new cut key work as normal?
3- Can I reprogram the other used transmitter car to work for my car?

    Thank you.

The metal tag doesn't go into the barrel at all.

The new cut key will work as normal but recoding the transponder may be a challenge, when I did mine I just bought a complete new blank and transponder and programmed them.

Yes, the metal tag is just for Toyota if I loose all keys, or at least that is what I understand. I found instructions through links posted on this site for Toyota two button keys. I am gonna try them out and see, I just wanted to know if it was possible at all to program a used transponder to work with my car before I go out and foot the bill for a brand new key and transponder from the dealer.

Don't spend the extra buying genuine, there's a few threads in this section pointing to a reputable seller on eBay.

I am gonna do my best to avoid buying from the dealer, already spent close to $70 USD trying to avoid them.

I later found a guy who can get me close to 50% off dealer list prices oh well, will update as soon as I try to program the transponder my self this week.

Are you guys certain that the metal part of the key that goes into the ignition does not have a chip inside it? I had to go back to the locksmith because the first cut was not great and I could not open the door with the new (copy) key. I am now able to insert the key into the ignition, the barrel would turn, but the car would not start!!!! The engine just keep turning over but it will not start. Is it a problem with the key, or is it a problem with a chop somewhere in the system? Cheers.

That sounds like a transponder problem.. Somehow through the plastic this enable the vehicle to start when the key is inserted in the barrel.

In the key (the plastic part) is a chip that the car communicates with. In your case the chip is absent or not programed to match your car so the immobiliser won't allow the car to start. The metal key only does two functions, turn the key barrel in the ignition and in the doors.

Thanks for the advice, I will try to program the key then and try the key again, I hope I can reprogram the transponder to work with my car, otherwise I would have wasted a whole lot of money instead of going with OEM, I just hate being taken for a ride by the dealer. I will report back if this works.

                      Regards.

Baz, the chip for the immobiliser is inside the central locking module, not the key blank. When you change it over to the new key it should work fine. I've done this.
