  • Updating insurance after mods

    Hey all,

I have been scrolling through the suspension and tyre sections and can't seem to find a straight answer that I understand. I have recently installed a 2" lift and put on 265/70/17's on my prado. Now from what I understand you can have either on your car but not both (this is illegal). It puts out the COG too much. Is this correct? If so, how do I go about updating my insurance, as they have no mods on my car on record and I don't want my car to be listed as illegal. Hope this query makes sense.

    Cheers
    Blake

Blake where are you located? I am guessing that a 2004 GXL will not have ESC in which case NCOP or QCOP will let you have both though neither are applicable in NSW at the moment and maybe other states.

Currently in Queensland both the old legislation and QCOP are active until end March (?).

Put your location in your profile so we can best attempt to answer your questions.

I am located in central Queensland mjrandom. Sorry if this sounds dumb but what are ncop and qcop? I'm guessing its legislation of some kind....
As for the esc, I am unsure sorry. I am only a new prado/4x4 enthusiast and have only recently begun looking under the hood (so to speak).

National Code of Practice and Queensland Code of Practice which in Qld overrides some of the NCOP clauses. Do a search in google for Pradopoint+QCOP or NCOP.

ESC is stability control and I think only the Grande had it pre Sept 06.

Previous rules were up to 50mm lift and up to 15mm increase in overall tyre diameter. With QCOP (vehicle without ESC) you can have a TOTAL of 75mm which is lift + tyres. In that case you should be fine with a 50mm lift and 265/70 tyres. The old rules and new rules run concurrently until end of March or early April. Cannot remember for sure.

I would still give your local Department against Transport or an engineer a call because as you will see in those threads there are a lot of differing opinions.

With ESC any lift is pretty much ruled out unless the manufacturer or the suspension manufacturer states that they have tested the system and ESC works as originally intended. ARB are willing to do this and I think TJM as well but I do not think you get the full 75mm only 50mm so the extra benefit of the 70 profile tyres is not allowed. I guess if the testing by ARB or TJM included the tyres then maybe. It really is all a bit unclear if you have ESC.

My 120 has ESC and fits within the old rules. My newly acquired 150 also has ESC and again complies with the old rules. When the dust settles and there is some certainty with the interpretation of the rules I might go to 70 profile tyres if that is deemed ok.

Talk to your insurer and ask them what their rules are. Most will probably agree as long as the mods are 'legal'.

Thanks Michael. I did do some research but like you said there are too many opinion which confused the shite outta me. I will give Queensland transport a call to double check before ringing my insurer. Will update the thread once I find out.

As for you getting 265/70 once the dust settles, I def recommend, they visually fill out my extra 2" of clearance better and look awesome. (BFG AT's).

          Thanks again
