  • Broken Wing Mirror

I found out that the mirrors don't bend the wrong way when I was reversing down a track, yes I know they should have been folded in

Now it is sagging rather sadly, I was curious if anyone had done this repair before. Hopefully Toyota built in a weak spot and I'll only have to replace a little plastic bit, but I have a bad feeling the answer would be to replace the entire mirror assembly.

    Blokeman,

The mirrors should bend (fold) in both directions. I caught one of mine when reversing out of a tight deadend track last week. It just folded forward and I pulled it back into position.
maybe there was a defect with yours that prevented the mirror from folding forward and not braking.

      wing mirror.

      Blokeman,
I busted mine when a canoe fell from my roof racks. They don't flex downwards at all!

Had it fixed at Toyota Bathurst - from memory it was not cheap - yep, the whole unit was around the $300 mark. Mine is a lease vehicle though so I didn't feel the pain as bad...

I learnt one valuable lesson....TIE the canoe to the rack, no matter how short a distance you intend to drive.

No it's definitely stuffed now! Perhaps the newer ones fold both ways? I'll have to check in a car park, mines a 2003...

mine folds both ways, but the folding forward (towards the engine) is not as easy as folding in towards the windows. I found that from reversing out of under the house after a storm when i clipped a stump. the mirror itself is fine but the "chrome" has a nice big scratch on it.

i did some searching and found some replacement parts from one of the china sellers. I never got around to it because their minimum order's were thousands of dollars and considering i only muck around with this "business" on the side i didn't have the capital.

some of the accessories i found and rough cost are HERE 4th and 5th one down.

Note: I'm not selling anything here at the moment, just for info about what I've found out there. if breach's anything mods can remove the link and people can PM me if they want info.

LED door mirrors look real interesting McBain.

Would they get their power from the mirror's remote adjustment motor?

I had some ingrate break one of mine off while i was working at the Brewery up here one Saturday night...

It cost just shy of $400 to replace. I think it was around $370 ish...

not sure on that one. though i had assumed that I'd have to run a power cable down to the indicator on the quarter panel.....

                  Kind of on topic...

Do the differences in the magnifications of the two mirrors (left and right) annoy anyone? If so, my old man got his changed in Adelaide ('07 Lux) so that the two are the same. It can be done. The Hilux obviously has differently styled mirrors but this guy makes them to spec.

hilux's are a commercial vehicle and only have to have commercial vehicle adr's or something along those lines. As such they can have 2 concave mirrors standard.. for some reason passenger cars need to have the drivers mirror as a standard mirror..

thats my guess anyway.. but it makes sense to me

I think that Hiluxes and Prados are made in different countries, which is why things like washer jets are different. I would imagine mirrors would be the same.

I did a similar thing. If it is just the mirror insert, this can be replaced at a cost of about $60. Its a bit fiddly to do but if I can anyone can. To replace the whole unit costs about $300 (ouch!)

Thanks for the replies guys. I am getting really close to actually doing something about repairing it!

Popped off the little triangle inside the door to reveal a 10mm nut, under the mirror itself is a little panel which when helped with a pocket knife popped off and there are 4 torx screws. At this point I wrapped the mirror in duct tape and got diverted to another job, when I finish it I'll post the results.

BTW mine do bend both ways after all, I don't know why the passenger side one broke, I wasn't going hard, just bumped it against a tree reversing down a narrow track...
