Noisy plastic spare cover

Before I get flamed for even having one of those sissy, plastic Prado covers over the spare, I bought this car for my wife's birthday and that's what she wanted - and it was thrown in free as part of the deal anyway .... so on to the problem ...

For the past few months the spare cover has become very squeaky - at low speeds every movement of the car results in an anoying noise. I have tried tightening the cover and I have replaced the rubber grommets inside the cover but nothing works. The spare is an original tyre with about 30k wear.

Am I missing something? Anyone with a fix?

Does it squeak with the cover off on the same roads? It may be the mounting brackets as well.

Good question but I can emulate the squeek by man handling the tyre cover when the car is at standstill. I'll have a look later.

Remove it to isolate the issue, if its still there remove the spare and drive again.
It could be loose bolts or something stuck behind the little plastic lip under the tyre.
