  • TD Prado Towing?

    Hi All,

    Well I have resigned myself to the fact that the 200 series isn't worth the money....

    Seriously looking at the VX TD Prado but I intend to purchase a 5.5 to 6m fibreglass boat within the next 1 to 2 years. A general question I know, but can anyone give me some real first hand knowledge of towing similar carts? Not fuel economy, but acceleration, best cruising and overtaking speeds etc?

    No at this stage I don't really have a trailer weight and no I am not going to compare to my current 100 series.

    Hi Russ,

    if you can wait till end of Jan/early Feb, I should have my new GXL TD Prado and will be towing a 6 m fibreglass boat (combined boat and trailer weight 1.7 ton). I will be more than happy to let you know how it tows (compared to current vehicle 3.4L V6 Prado).

      My boat weighs about 1000kg and behind the D4D I don't even know that it is there.

        I may be able to give my experience with my 2007 auto TD VX

        I just finished a 4500km trip towing a 5 metre boat filled with about 200kg of stuff. Total weight about 1.4 ton + 3 adults in the car loaded to the roof with stuff.

        overall i found the TD Prado towed well. Where I had to plant my foot for overtaking and say I was travelling at 90-110km/h I found the TD engine lacking (I guess to be expected from a 3 litre engine). Having owned a Petrol Prado and having towed the same rig when I used to plant my foot the power was obvious and I used to easily pass the other cars. With the TD I just felt something was missing and it took longer to overtake. (once again at these higher speeds). Cruising was fine as were towing on hills.

        Where it did make up over the petrol was fuel economy. Averaged about 11.5 litres/ 100km for the whole trip.

            I have just completed a relatively short journey around 200km towing my camper trailer, which is tare weight around 960kg, axles are rated to 1500kg and it was fairly well loaded up.

            Trip was through hilly type country, D4D had plenty of power and generally sat at around 90-100 km with plenty in reserve. What did concern me though was the 16.5 litres/100km.

            Also of major concern was the fuel gauge that appears to be not reading correctly. According to Scangauge I had used 142 litres when the green light came on for the second tank. Mileage was at 1243km, so around 11.4 L/100km for the tank. Scangauge was reasonably accurate because the tank took 142.4 litres to fill.
            Has anyone else experienced this inaccuracy of the main tank? Vehicle has now clocked up 44,000kms and I have noticed the past three tank fulls have been gradually getting worse for accuracy before the light comes on but this is certainly the worst.
