Rear End Whining Noise

Hi All
My 2004 120 GXL has a whining noise in the rear left wheel(?) which starts once I hit 60km/h. Before I spend $500 on buying a new set of rear wheel bearings, is there anything else I should be checking first? If not, where is the best place to buy wheel bearings?

Is there any chance you got water in the diff? I can't say I've heard of wheel bearings chopping out unless it is related to a seal leaking or some other issue?

Sensible response: I have also heard about water in the diff causing a whine. If an inspection of the bearing doesn't show up anything then that would be where I looked next.

Irresistible response: I whined about my girlfriends rear once.... 4 days in intensive care cured that.
