  • Stolen Key

    Hey there

I have a problem I hope the members can help me with.

Discovered this morning that someone has gotten into our newly aquired 2007 Prado GXL whilst we were unloading groceries in the house and has taken our "surf" key ( blank key I had cut at the key man so I can take the key when i go for a swim and then use it to open up the Prado to get to the Toyota electronic key I leave in the car )

Not happy about it, but happy they didnt take our pride and joy

    So . . . . questions

Will the "surf" key cut at the mr key man start the car ? I know it will open the door, but will it start it ?
I tried the spare key that came with the car ( that has no electronics ) and that starts the car - so my concern is that whomever has they key can come back and start it ! ! !

If the culprit has a key that starts our Prado, what are the options then ? ie replacing locks etc ? How much would this cost ? Are there any options ? ?

I have searched through previous posts but have been unable to find any info

My non electronic key wont start the car. It turns the starter motor but the engine doesn't fire up. I assume it is because the immobiliser needs to sense the proper key is there. They will still be able to get into your car and take anything they want though im afraid

Hey Kevin - thanks for your response.

Again, I am happy it wasn't able to be started ! ! So thats a bit of a relief.

Has anyone had a similar thing happen and had to replace all the locks and new keys ? How much did it cost ?

Can i simply get the drivers side door lock replaced ( and the rear door if there is one ). Not an ideal solution as we will end up with a key to manually open the door lock/s and an electronic key to automatically open all doors - but this will get rid of the issue of someone having a key that can access our Prado

Agree with Kevin here I just went and tried it. I had to get a new fob as mine was cracked around where the key ring goes so I got two new ones ebay $12 to my door and $22 to get the keys cut. I kept the old keys but transferred the inside of the remote to the new ones. I just went and put the old key with no internals on the remote into ignition and flicked the key and just sat there turning over till I turned the key back to the off position so your safe there....Might be cheaper to put an alarm in so if the low life does come back and opens the door without disabling the alarm first it will go off. I imagine this would be way cheaper then changing over locks/barrels etc......Maybe is this covered under your insurance ?? might be cheaper that way if you really want to change the locks over. If doing that might as well go the whole way and get ignition done as well but only if going through insurance as going this way I believe requires a new computer module as well ??.....No one around with CCT camera's that you may be able to identify who the lo life scum bag was.... Hi Steve

I will be ringing an automotive locksmith tomorrow and discuss options with them. Cheapest option i reckon will be to get the door barrel lock/s replaced. I will let PP members know how i go and approx costs.

Unfortunately no CCT cameras or the like around

On a side note - we only have 1 master key and on reading on other posts we will be getting another one ( just in case )

Prado's are common and so would be the color.
I thought maybe just change the registration plate as the cheaper option as the buggers couldn't then identify your car.
Then re read your post - taken from out front of home. They know where it lives.
I'd be biting the insurance co to replace keys locks and whatever it takes. I wouldn't want a pocket full of keys for different tasks.

Maybe find another prado owner to swap ignition barrels and door locks with?

Not that easy with the ignition pilbara, you would then have another key for the ignition which won't talk to the ECU so would also have to swap over ECU hoping that it would be ok being second hand..... Cheers Steve

Toyota is capable of reprogramming ecu to allow another key... just FYI.

of course how much they charge for such a service is another story altogether.

Furthermore, if it's this key?...... it can be opened and it's internals changed if your cluey enough

Don't need to be cluey just unscrew take out the guts all one piece, place into new head clip screw done. Did both mine in under 5 mins just need one of those jewellers screw driver to undo screw and this is where you may find you need glasses lol cause the screw is that bloody small I had to find it to actually put the tip of the screw driver in it. The new screw that comes with the new head is fine cause it's not full of crap at least like mine was..... Cheers Steve

That's handy to know RanJ, father in law had to get ECU when he lost both keys to his older commodore, well at least that's what Holden told him.... Cheers Steve

Also anyone requiring new fob due to it cracking around where the key ring goes, $6 to my door including the new blank key off eBay same as original minus the Toyota emblem on the back of it even has the indentation where the logo normally goes. Mr minute $$$ 60 for it to be cut. $11 from the local key cutting store in Penrith..... Cheers Steve

Hey everyone thanks for the replies.

I have booked the Prado in to get the drivers door lock cylinder replaced for approx $140. This will leave us with a manual key for the drivers door and the original electronic key for the automotic door locks. How often do you normally use the manual key anyway ! ! ? ?

FYI's - quoted approx $380 to get both the drivers door cylinder lock and the ignition barrel lock replaced and keyed alike. Was quoted $700 and upwards depending on where you go

As mentioned before I am looking at getting another "master" key . . . To get one through a dealership is approx $600 ! ! Cheaper option is to get a cheaper price through an auto locksmith $400 or now looking on Ebay etc to source a blank master key that I can programme. Best price i have found is $220 from an OZ supplier or approx $70 (incl postage) from a UK supplier - then have to get the new key cut to match the old key and then programme it

Has anyone been able to source a cheaper blank "master" key ? ?

A Prado is capable of having two different master keys. It is supplied with two masters, they have different coding in them. What you can do is get the key cutter to clone your key. Thus not requiring a reprogram as the ecu cannot discern which between your original master and your new master. ... if that makes any sense.

Steve, as for your dads commodore, that bothers me when dealerships do that. What I get locksmiths to do on commodores is disassemble the the plastic shroud from the steering column, get the barrel out and make a key from the numbers stamped inside. Once they have done that, they have a key that'll turn the ignition barrel to the On position. Once that is done, a tech2 handheld can then program any key to the BCM.
