You were right the first time Chippy.! The Optitron dash is exactly what you described, and the Satnav unit is totally separate.

It makes a lot more sense being the Satnav unit.! Theiving ba#$@'s...!!!

Guys the market for these is currently overeas to the middle east. There is a big market in rebirthing and all things toyota 4wd over there and it is amazing how fast they can do what they do. If the toyota service dept was as fast it would really reduce servicing costs.

I had a similarly heartbreaking experience so Sydney Grande owners be warned. Mine had less than 1000km on the clock when I discovered it in the morning minus the passenger window and the entire central console. I live in quiet street in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

The cops couldn't believe the size of the gaping hole in the dash. I couldn't believe the $10k cost to repair the damage.

It appeared as though the theives had been disturbed as there were signs they had tried to remove the instrument panel. Apparently the crooks will put the odo in a much older car to increase its value.

Also stolen were the manual and two pairs of sunnies. A small consolation was that my Wallabies beanie and bp petrol card (with pin written on it) were not taken.

Police finger-printed my car but found only glove prints. That together with the scale of the theft show that this was a professional job.

An insurance broker told me that the sat nav unit fits in Toyotas and Nissans so it is easy to sell on.

I'd like to ask the question here: can anyone recommend a good car alarm?

I guess they broke the window to bypass the alarm system so they can gain entry without the alarm going off

A fix could be to install a sensor that will trigger the alarm if the beam is broken inside. I think I have something to work with. The only problem is if someone works it out, how do we install it without giving the thieves the information also :?

Good car alarm: Hungry Pitt Bull with rabies!

If this keeps up we're going to have to get security camera's watching our parked cars at night. Stinking thieving Fragwits can smile on candid camera. I know when I park mine out the front of the house, I never seem to sleep as well....

What we need is to bait the slime and put some type of tracking device on the units. Then just see where the little beeping light goes.

Yep! We track a lot of our council vehicles with a GPS system. Through triangulation between a base station, a satellite, and the car you can theoretically get a positional accuracy of 2 mil. Though, we find our accuracy is about 10 - 20 millimeters. If the car goes under a tree or inside a building that might blow out to say 3 meters. Plenty good enough to find a stolen car or piece of expensive equipment. Right now the units are expensive. Given time though the price will come down.

How many people wouldn't install a locating system in case their car gets stolen. Heck, I know I would.

You can't track those Micro-Dots can you? I thought the idea with those was that police etc could scan the dotted item (up close) and find out who it belongs to.

                          hi dustie

after your prado was written off, how did you track it ?

Usually the last time you see your vehicle is at the holding yard, then it disappears into the insurance vortex

the fella who bought from the auction and shipped it to Lebanon rang me, found my name in the log book (bloody insurance company should've scratched it). The new owners in Lebanon had lost the keys and this fella rang to find out whether I had the spare keys....

fyi - it was a stat w/off so he couldn't sell the car in Oz.

Have you seen some of the vehicles they drive around the Middle east?
They wouldn't even be bothered repairing it before putting on the streets :!:
