hey all here is an update i have for you in our research / search for a Prado for the first time.

Me and the Mrs went to a car stealer locally and sat in a 2006 GXL 3L Turbo Diesel model (auto) yay and put the kids in the back seat to see what they thought. and well here's the verdict the Mrs loved it so much more space and the seats were so comfortable, and the space in the back will hold 3x baby seats for our third child (eventuall will come along) so she is super happy.
whilst there a stealer sales consultant approached us after a good 15 minutes alone in the car fiddling and checking everything we liked...

he took us around the car and asked us what we were looking for i said the VX with sat nav and bla bla bla - he then proceeded to giev similar advise in the last two posts. GXL will have so much more bang for your $ and he said if the Sat Nav is the only reason you're looking at a VX over a GXL - i think personally that's insane - i'm like wow you just said that he goes i'm not here to sell you something i dont think you'd really want i could care less you've got a family and if you want to spend "don't quote me on this" - i am going to quote him here to make the point. if you want to spend an extra $10k on a VX just because of the sat nav but you don't care about any of the other options i'll sell you one but otherwise it wouldn't be worth it...

so now after that the wife and i are going to go and look at the GXL's now in the future. since unlimiting my searches from VX / GXL - i've found a giant range of them for "cheaper" / more affordable price so that's really nice.. so now we're just looking around for the GXL's school me on this what are some specific engine things i should take note of?

also 4speed / 5speed ?? - i get that the 5speed will be better on fuel (but we're not looking at these in terms of fuel economy) so what's better or not better about a 5 speed / 4 speed? still the same driver friendly'ness ?

4 speed was on the 1KZ-TE (diesel)auto. When the D4D (1KD-FTV, newer diesel) came out (2006)..like the one you sat in they changed the transmission to 5 speed auto. A few peeps get confused with the petrol V6 version which changed to a 5 speed transmission around the end 2004. So basically if your buying a diesel it's a totally different engine /set up. Take your time. Aftermarket sat navs are very good, if your only buying a VX because of that you may be wasting your money. GXL with rear air is possibly what you need....don't rush...

trying really hard not to rush it's just so exciting!!!
so we went and test drove this beast yesterday:

        http://search.cdsonline.com.au/detai...tatistic=&xBy=
        2008 GXL - 135,000 k's ($26,990)
        sat nav (standard)
        reverse sensors
        bull bar
        side steps
relay / wiring for spot lights
        electric trailer breaks
        towbar
        full underbody steel bash plates
        dual zone climate control
        rear air conditioning
        5 speed auto
entire / full service history the worst one in the book was service was due at 40,000k's and they took it in at 41,000k's other wise it was all only 100k's out of the service date / k's time.
no additional services.. all byu the toyota dealer in Tamworth.
it has towed a caravan - which concerns me a LITTLE bit (only because my dad alwasy said never buy a car that's been used to tow something)

anyway sounds okay goes brilliantly only thing i noticed was.... under labour (as in put foot to the floor) you could hear little tickign from the engine ? i've never owned this engine before so i'm not sure if it's normal / standard noise or wether it's becasuse the engine is about to let go after towing a caravan i was told it was a mid sized trailer maybe 1.5tons...
so kind of excited however then looking aroudn on car sales and such i have found other vechicle with 208,000ks' 215,000 k's for around $17,000 similar'ISH mods but more k's this is where the question comes into play, do you pay more for less k's or do you pay less for more k's ?? that's jsut what i don't know :'(
oh and this rig at the stealers is a 2008... other ones ar all 2005 / 2006 that i've looked at on car sales

is a little bit of engine tick? fan felt tick?" normal? any one near me have one of these i could go for a ride in or drive in to hear if it's the same sort of noise??

Ok that probably explains the ticking sound. It's actually from the exhaust manifold. It's extremely common on the V6 4L petrol. Turn the radio up or shut the window or both lol. The only way to stop it is by extractors which really isn't worth it just to stop the ticking noise, you hear it more under heavy throttle and if your up against say a dividing wall on a freeway and your excelerating. Transmission wise and towing I wouldn't worry about that. Really how much towing has it done in those klms remembering they are made for towing and the V6 comes from the factory with a tranny cooler. Sounds like an ideal vehicle to me..... Cheers Steve

I remember the 120 V6 we had at my last job had a tick..... and it was only a few yrs old and bugger all kms at the time.

It wasnt loud, just remember thinking it was odd for such a new car. Bit like the "whoosh" brake noise in 150's

so turns out yes you're all right !

the tick is 'normal' -- went for drive in a friends prado and heard the exact same tick! whoo hoooo!
in a way i'm massively relieved becuase now i know a heap more about what to listen for and hear. but it also makes me a little bit sad knowing that, it's a normal noise makes me very sckeptical lol who designs an engine to tick? *derp*

so over all i'm very happy and now will be looking to buy one feel i have done a bunch of research and know exactly what i'm looking for now!!!
