  • Re: Cracked dashboard

Toyota just had another recall today on US Lexuses for some fuel leak problems.
It's probably the best time to convince them to do right and save themselves from further embarrassment.

Thanks for the email wannawodka!! Haven't checked this thread in a few weeks and that link to Drive Q & A was great!

Went to Toyota at Brendale today. Asked if someone could have a look at this crack in my dashboard. I have 2006 model.

Guy came out and had a look at it. He told me they changed to a new material after 2007 that is better UV rated. We went back inside. He spoke to someone who called someone else in and then someone else joined in and they had a little chit-chat that I could see but not hear. He emerged from the room carrying a Toyota Warranty Newsflash piece of paper. Read it all upside down. Was going to take a photo but couldn't get it away from him. He took photos of the rego, the split in dash, all my vehicle servicing pages and put it through for out of warranty claim.

The paper said (along the lines of) It has been brought to out attention that many 120 series Prado owners have reported cracking in their dashboards. Toyota's goodwill is to replace dashes from current to 2006. Each other one is on a case by case basis. It stated that the service person must observe the vehicle and report on the condition of it on how the owner has looked after it ie. unrepaired damage. There was more stuff on the rear of the page but I didn't get one look at it. I asked him for a copy and he said no way. It's internal only. It did have dates such as 2009 -> 2006 Parts and Labour included and two more sets of dates and case by case written next to one of them. Was too far away to read.

Anyways. I'll report back here when they call me next week and reject it :x I was stoked they have a memorandum in the office about it though! Obviously means something is happening inside!

        Fantastic News Pauly!!!

        TMCA... goodwill... blah. I take four things from this;

        1) Prado owners deserve a pat on the back for taking it to Goliath
        2) Hopefully those of us who have had their dashboards replaced already have had post-2007 stock fitted and won't have the problem reoccur
        3) Toyota have formally acknowledged that there IS a problem with the dashboards (UV affected) to the point where they needed to use better material (from 2007)
        4) Toyota - why did you pick only 5 years/back to 2006 models?... 2006 models had the crap dashboards the same as 2003, 2004 and 2005... why haven't we all been treated consistently?... what's the difference?... exactly... NONE. Can't wait for this to flopped in front of a magistrate!

        Goodwill... BLAH..... grow some balls!

Guys can you share the letters that went to Toyota? I would like to follow on my end in Trinidad and see if there's any redress.

            Great News!!!

Thanks to all the help from this forum, I'm having my dash replaced. Although the crack that has appeared is only minor (about 1.5cm at the moment, I have a 2006 model) they have approved it. I must say that the whole process was the easiset thing I've done. No arguing just went in there with all the info I've learnt from here!

            Thanks again pradopoint members!

              Hi all
I've now been offered 100% on the dash but I have to pay $700 for labour to fit.
Does that sound OK or is there something better I can expect?

                Hi Kevin
I guess it depends on the Dealer. My local Dealer charged $218.18 to fit my dashboard (Done at a fleet rate). So I guess $700 does sound a bit extreme.
                Hope this helps.

I was originally quoted $800+ from the first dealer. The 2nd dealer quoted less than $290. Anyone who who quotes more than $300 doesn't want the work or doesn't give a shit. Shop around!

I've offered to pay up to $300, I'll see what they come back with.
They are taking the piss a bit really though, Toyota are obviously accepting that the dashboards are made of crap hence the 100% contribution but why should I have to pay for their crap when it comes to labour?
The garage that has quoted me $700 is Sunshine Toyota on the Sunshine Coast, if they don't come back with something reasonable I'll take my custom elsewhere. I also got told that the 100% offer is only for 30 days!! What's that all about then?

Good news, Sunshine Toyota at Sippy Downs are doing it on Thursday for $300 so I'm happy about that. Just a few months ago Toyota refused to give me anything and now they are giving me the dash for free and labour of $300.

Just shows it's worth persisting and nagging, never give up

Good luck to the others out there

I have had my dash replaced for $700 (Ballina Toyota) and am in the process of being reimbursed. I have sought legal advice and have sent a letter to Max Yasuda at Toyota requesting this,

I will let you all know what happens.

Picked the Prado up yesterday with it's brand new dash. Have a 2006 model with 1cm long hairline crack. Am really happy with the service I got from Toyota Brendale. No negotiation, no arguing, no letters. Easy as! As being a second owner I thought I would have had some problems but none at all.

I booked our 2004 in for it's service and once again I asked them "Old Mac Springwood"to report the numerous cracks in the dash, as I have done numerous times before. Again they are denying that it is a known issue and saying things like "In all my years with Toyota yours is only the 4th Prado I have seen with cracks" They said that they would look into it once I told him to have a look at the Pradopoint site. I left the car with them overnight as I was going out of town with work. When my wife picked the car up not a mention of the dash so I guess I will be phoning them again tomorrow. I get the distinct feeling that they have no intention of assisting in anyway. I have 2 Toyota Prados so maybe I need to find another dealer, such a shame as they are so close to home.

Glad to say Sunshine Toyota at Sippy Downs replaced my dashboard on Thursday, looks like new again now.
They said they have fitted several dashboards so I'd say there's a few Prado's up this way that have had the problem.
It cost me $300 for the labour and nothing for the dashboard and now I'm happy.

To the previous poster, it's not down to the dealer to make a decision it's down to Toyota warranty, I can assure you that if the dealer contacts Toyota you will get a result. If Toyota turns it down the dealer can lodge an appeal on your behalf. That's what Sunshine Toyota did and with the help from Tanya at that dealer it got sorted.
