  • Re: Cracked dashboard

Okay here it is. The reply to my appeal.

    Dear Mr ****
Thank you for taking the time to write to Mr Yasuda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation Australia. In relation to concerns with above mentioned vehicle.

We understand the expectation that customers have of our vehicles, as we strive to deliver products and service of the highest quality at all times. We therefore regret the disappointment you have expressed in relation to a dashboard crack in above mentioned vehicle and appreciate the opportunity to investigate this matter.

As I am aware, Toyota New Vehicle Warranty is provided for a period of 3 years or 100,000 (whichever occurs first) and your vehicle has now exceeded these limits. In an effort to assist you Ballina Toyota submitted a claim to toyota National Warranty for out of warranty Assistance. Toyota National Warranty has considered your claim and offered 50% parts as a goodwill gesture only. We believe this is to be a fair and reasonable offer considering the age of the vehicle and can only extend our sincere apology that you are not satisfied with this gesture.
Whilst we remain sympathetic to your position and the cost of the repairs incurred, regrettably we are unable to offer any further reimbursement.

We do however thank you for your correspondence and reiterate our apology for any disappointment this matter has caused.

So there it is guys. Its seems there are a lot of variances in the case by case decisions that are passed down. Sunshine Toyota at Sippy Downs replaced the dash dash free of charge on kevinbloomfield's 2003 Prado and his has more than 40,000 kms than mine. Go figure??

The lesson here is don't take the 50% offer and cry about it later. Get Toyota to do the right thing in the first place.

After lodging an appeal with Sunshine Toyota, I received notification that my original offer stands (1/2 cost of dash + $550 to fit).

While I am sure that the dealer has done all they can do for me, it seems there are some amazing inconsistencies in the treatment of customers by Toyota Warranties. This was through the same dealer that was able to offer Kevin Bloomfield the full cost of his dash, with $300 to fit. The dealer was unable to explain to me why my offer is substancially less than that, even though the vehicles are identical in year and model.

I am not really sure what my next step wll be - considering a "$20 for 20 minute" legal consultation to get advice on the matter.

** on an interesting note....it was mentioned that mine was one of several phone calls that had to be made on the same issue. Seems llike they have given up on the old line "yours is the only one we have seen like that".

Well it has just in the last week happened to my prado, a crack appeared around R/H side vent.I checked thoroughly before buying 3mths ago with no cracks showing,The car has been garaged when not used, has been in a cool mountain climate all life by both me and prev owner ,always had a dash mat [which does cover cracking] but a crack has developed. We did have a hot spell early last month and car did go to Qld sunshine coast in jan so maybe these factors affected it ,but still am not happy.
I guess i will take it to Windsor toyota NSW to see what their responce is ,[has anyone had dealings there with this issue?]

They said they have fitted several dashboards so I'd say there's a few Prado's up this way that have had the problem.
It cost me $300 for the labour and nothing for the dashboard and now I'm happy.

To the previous poster, it's not down to the dealer to make a decision it's down to Toyota warranty, I can assure you that if the dealer contacts Toyota you will get a result. If Toyota turns it down the dealer can lodge an appeal on your behalf. That's what Sunshine Toyota did and with the help from Tanya at that dealer it got sorted.
Thanks Kevin, I contacted them again today and got a totally different response so we will see what happens.

They appear to be taking it seriously now and then out of the blue I got a recall notice for my bullbar on Friday, apparently they are worried about chasis fatigue. So how come I get a recall on the bullbar which they said they would fix for free but there is an absolute sh**fight to get any recognition about the faulty dash.

They did my bullbar as well but I noticed yesterday they left a couple of bolts out!! Also, since the dashboards been done the back windows don't work.
I can feel a phone call coming on!!

As to Toyota paying for 100% of the dash, I think it's because I was very persistant and wouldn't let it go. You know the old saying 'squeaky wheel get's the oil'

If this was taken legal than you could use mine as a precidence (or a similar word), there's no reason mine is anything special, 2003 model with 153,000 kms on the clock. Parked outside mostly and not looked after particularly well.

I have had a similar problem when the battery has been disconnected. I find if you wind the windows up and down (you will need to use the control on the rear doors, not the front drivers door), they seem to start working properly again.

As for my dash, I thought I was being quite persistant, as I have put in 2 out of warranty claims and 3 appeals. Maybe I was too persistant!

What frustrated me the most is they would not or could not give me an explanation of why my claim was rejected. Mine is also a 2003, but only has 110000kms, original owner, always serviced, garaged and looked after quite well. Go figure???

Have you any paperwork that I could take with me when I seek legal advice?

                    Hi All

You can add me to the list my dash looks like a day 5 test pitch. Glad to hear there have been some good news stories as i an about to put the gloves on.I have a late 2004 model always undercover, always used sunsheild if parked outside, cleaned only with damp cloth. So all i can put it down to is that it mush be the high end quality parts the are used by TOYota. Why give you only one crack when for the same price you can have many oh what a feeling.

                    Cheers

Well Old Mac Toyota Springwood have come back to me with a 50% of dash cost by I have to pay 100% of fitting, I asked how much to fit and was quoted an all up price of $1,500. I was told that they really didn't know how much to charge as they didn't know how long it wold take as nobody has taken them up on the offer, but expected it to take around 10 hours. I think that I will now have to quote the charge from Sippy Downs.

It took Ballina Toyota about 4 hours to do mine. I dropped my car off just after lunch and it was done by 5 o'clock. $1500 is way to much, keep shopping and find someone that knows what they are doing.

Don't accept 50% would be my advice. If they are offering that then they are accepting an element of blame or that they have supplied faulty goods that are not of merchantable quality. As to fitting, it took Sippy Downs about 2 - 3 hours to do and the total cost was $300.

Toyota are taking the piss and so are the dealers. Stick to your guns and you will get 100% on the dashboard and $300 for fitting.

I Have the same problem here in Trinidad West Indies. All prado dashboards crack here as the heat in the Caribbean is every day of the year.Prados are so expensivehere(100K USdollars) owners never take them off road.I have four brothers who all have prados and all of their dashboards are cracked as well.I have a friend who has one and constantly armourall his and it keeps well.Dust is not a problem for us here in Trinidad. The dashboard is made with inferior materials as older cars dashboards stand up to the heat here.My dash is probably the worst one in Trinidad over 30 cracks and peeling off.
