  • The ideal off road caravan

Hi Prado people, Can anyone recommend an off road caravan suitable for a 2007 Prado powered by a D4D 3L diesel auto please? I would like something that would get into the Bungle Bungles. There seems to a minefield of vans out there, some fully off road but heavy, others semi off road. All have to be under the 2.5 t as spec towing weight for 120 series Prados. Keep safe.

AFAIK only single axle off-road/heavy duty caravans and camper trailers are allowed into the park, but not dual axle. Should narrow the choice down for you. If you're thinking of Mitchell Falls off the Gibb River Road, I'd be worried about the corrugations shaking any van to pieces.

Can't recommend a van though as we are strictly a tent and swag family.

I like the look of the Complete Campsite Exedeus, but not the $90000 price tag!
I've decided to build my own.

The range of Golf caravans have appealed to me since their release, lots of good features for their price ,

Hotel/motel at Broome/Derby, Fitzroy Xing and Kununurra/Wyndham. ElQ & Emma Gorge have various accommodation options. There's also donga style available at some of the homesteads. Other than that you're in your swag/tent/camper. It ain't the Gold Coast.

Those are what I would describe as rough road caravans, ok for maintained dirt roads. I doubt very much that you would get one of those into the Bungle Bungles, they would get hung up going through some of the creek crossings on the way in I reckon.

I am with Whitey, plans to make my own but still want it to be more camper trailer than caravan.

                        Cheers Andrew

They have options/mods that are not listed on the website for rear cutaways and higher suspension etc. Agreed they're not as hardcore as a Kedron/Bushw@nker, but you won't be towing those with a Prado anyway. Have a look at some of the owners pics, they have been taken into and proven in a lot of AU.

What do you want in a caravan. There's as many options and layouts as there is brands. Do you need an internal shower, toilet, or room for children or friends to sleep. A lot of the true go anywhere caravans are around 13 to 15 foot(15' is starting to push it for offroad capabilities)so there on the small side and as such space is a compromise. Some will have an internal shower and external kitchen or vice versa.
My choice would be a trakmaster Gibson
                            http://www.trakmaster.com.au/off-road-caravans/gibson/
Or perhaps something from Kimberly karavans
                            http://www.kimberleykaravans.com/off-road-caravans
The other option is a crossover van like the mdc xt10( no affiliation to 4wdcraption)
Or the smaller conqueror uev-490 or similar. All comes down to what you need. My needs are a cold beer when I stop at camp and something to sleep in after to many said beers so a swag on the roof and a fridge in the back of the prado and I'm happy as a pig in mud

The road less travelled is definitely the best road to be on

Hi, just thought I would let you know that I have owned a Golf Hawksberry off road van since 1996. (6months old) it's been the toughest and most reliable van I know, it follows the Prado faultlessly and I am able to take it where ever the Prado goes, my Prado is a V6 and as you may know, the off road Golf is tough but heavy,1800 kgs, the car pulls it at speed with plenty of reserve power. I get around 17.5 ltrs per 100 Kim towing flat. I have details of the van on Gumtree as I am selling. Hope this helps.
