Cup holders stuck in rear seat armrest

Weird request perhaps but i cant seem to get the cup holders to come out of the fold down arm rest in the centre of the rear seat?
Jammed in and no idea how to go about getting them to come out?
Any suggestions?

Mines similar to yours. Was stuck due to daughter putting coins in there. Got most of the coins out but now the cup holder doesn't go all the way back in.

Mine fight over it and slam each other fingers in there, which results in my arm being flung around behind my seat to catch the offender. Needless to say it remains up now. No exceptions.

Sometimes a drink ( or blood) spills in there and gums up the release mechanism. It's a matter of attempting to hook it out with something..
Like the bones of a small child..
