I think worrying about which is the main and which is the sub is pointless really, they effectively act as one tank, so just treat them as one and forget the rest.

The only time I have been rich enough to fill up the 2nd tank is when we go on long trips cause I like to fill from the local BP which is only 2 yrs old so I figure they're the cleanest local tanks. Otherwise it's $50 here & $50 there for me week to week2008 120 GX D4D with a few extras

Ive had my D4D for about 6 weeks, only had one full tank through it and got 1350, most of this was stop start driving and 200km of towing my Johnnos off road camper trailer. 169L to refill so apparently 11ltrs floating around after about 50km of the fuel light coming on while towing the camper. From what Ive read yep treat it as one full tank and aim for 1300-1600km depending on your driving and types of trips your doing. Oh and the mrs has a bloody heavy foot so i reckon i could of squeezed at least another 100km out of the tank if I was the main driver.
