What should my first Mod be?

I would have used my shovel at least 100 times in the last 5 years when traveling, which is why each person needs to work out what suits them.

I've got a useful one if you're going to tow anything, and it's cheap too! Pull the shroud off the reversing camera and cut a notch out of it (or just remove it altogether) so you can see the tow ball when you're reversing.

Hi guys,

Just brought my very first 4WD (2004 VX, Diesel) and after some opinions for what my first mod should be. I want to do everything I can to it but obviously need to prioritise properly.

The car will be used to drive our camper trailer anywhere we can. It will also be used on 6 hour return highway trips once every month. We are driving over to Perth for our first major trip the coming December/January and I plan to do a bit of beach driving as well as a moderate 4WD track here and there.

I currently have a allow sovereign bar on the front and that is it! Such a blank canvas it's hard to start somewhere. Personally I am thinking of a snorkel and suspension followed by some decent tyres?

Any advice is great! Really look forward to getting out amongst it and also being a part of this forum!

First mod should be a jacking plate.

Regardless of where you go or how you use the vehicle at some stage you will need to use your jack on soft ground.

I have a 300mm square piece of checker plate under the front seat.

As it turns out, I use a piece of 2"x6" square for my LPG on the RhinoRack, it doubles as a jacking base as well.

So many predictable and "helpful" answers. Here's what you really need...

First and foremost should be a stick family sticker. I know i've spent many previous minutes looking at a car and wondering how many people might be in the drivers' family. With the stick family stickers, that problem is solved! Some say the stick family fad has passed. Well, in 20 years time it'll come back around. Who'll be laughing then, huh?


You should also consider a set of fuzzy dice. Hung from your rear view mirror, these bad boys scream "cool." You can get them in many colours, but pink will show everyone you're comfortable in your masculinity. It will also give you something to play with when you're bogged to your axles because you didn't buy something useful.


If there ever is any doubt about your masculinity, a set of truck nutz will clear the air. At only $30, this has gotta be the cheapest way to give your car some balls.


If you actually want to put something on your car that's going to help you off-road, get a set of Maxtrax or Treds. But, as an off-road enthusiast, it's important that they remain mounted and prominently displayed on your car at all times. This will let everyone know that you do go off-road.

As suggested above....... 4WD driving course, good quality air pump and tyre guage. Run tyres around 38psi on tar and 28 psi on dirt [and keep speeds down to around the 80kph mark on these dirt pressures.] Take it from there- snorkel if diesel, all terrain tyres when the other ones wear out; recovery gear....$$$$$$$$. Get out there and enjoy it without spending a fortune then get stuff as you need it.

err why no snorkel for petrol prados ? Also I have those dunlop grandtreks and all the reviews said they are rubbish. I went on a 4WD course last weekend, and my prado was the only one that couldn't get up one of the muddy slopes, as the tyres filled up with mud and stones and were like smooth tyres with no grip at all. Once get some dollars gonna get the BFGs as more aggressive tread when I do go off-road.

You can use your max trax for that purpose. Double them up. Can also run the flat tyre up on to the maxtrax to gain clearance so the jack fits under the axle.

I can understand getting away with out everything else but if you don't take a shovel or something that doubles as a shovel you can't bury your poo.

Are you one of those that leaves your poo and poo paper all over the place?

Can we assume from that, you have never really ventured very far West of the great dividing range? Certainly sounds like you have never spent much time in the Western Deserts, or on any of the many thousands of kilometres of unmaintained goat tracks that criss cross the centre of Australia.

A high lift jack is probably not necessary, although occasionaly handy, but I wouldn't venture out into the Western Deserts without those other items.
