If someone came up to me and asked to borrow my shovel to bury their poo , they probably would not like my response

A high lift jack is probably not necessary, although occasionaly handy, but I wouldn't venture out into the Western Deserts without those other items.

About as far west as big red . I don't live on the edge of the desert . I also have no interest in crossing millions of sand dunes so I can say I did it , I've done plenty of that already .Let me ask you guys a question . When you go camping with friends do you all carry an individually personalised shovel for the sole reason to bury your turds . Or do you get together with the people on your trip and work out who's carrying which item or do you just blindly overload your vehicles with excess crap so you can say look my shovel is better than yours .
Some of us don't need rescuing , and if I'm ever in a situation where I do need rescuing , I guarantee a shovel or a jack or max trax won't fix the problem .

For interest sake I just weighed my shovel, it is so light it didn't even register on the bathroom scales and I had to use the kitchen scales, it came in at 1723 grams.

So in answer to your question, yes on a remote trip with a group we would make sure that certain items aren't doubled up in order to save weight and space, but a shovel is never one of those items, I always carry a shovel end of story. Its not just for turds either, I use it often for a variety of reasons, the hassle to share a shovel to save 1.7kg in weight is just not even worth contemplating.

I recall one trip a year or so ago that I did with a mate, we went to the high country and planned to return home through the Mallee Deserts, as often happens things didn't quite go to plan and I ended up being on my own for the leg through the Mallee, now what would I have done if my mate had of been the one carrying the shovel and jacking plate? Both of which I used during those few days!

As for carrying a shovel to say its better than someone else's, or driving across the Simpson just to say I've done it, those comments are bordering on the bizzare, my shovel is very ordinary and extremely boring, and I drove across the Simpson to experience it and enjoy myself.

Also in the context of this thread, a shovel a set of maxtrax and a jacking plate all up would be around 10kg's, that's hardly blindly overloading your vehicle is it?

          Cheers Andrew

Don't forget AJ the shovel is handy for scooping out some embers from the fire to put under your camp chair in order to warm your backside. Now, who showed us that trick?

Shovel also handy for digging drainage channels around your tent/swag when the precipitation gets a little heavy. Also handy for digging a hole for your campfire so that, when it's time to leave, you can fill the fire in and not leave a big messy spot behind you. Digging and shaping a hole for your camp oven or camp shower drain pit. A very handy tool with lots of practical uses besides as a recovery aid.

Also digging a fire pit, shifting logs on the fire, removing coals for cooking, digging holes to drop a camper wheel in to level it, used as a rake for cleaning the ground under the tent, burying crap................ I could go on.

                Cheers Andrew
