  • Just got a prado but.....

    Hi All,

I just walked away from a dealer with a second hand 2006 GXL with the D4D motor and only 34500 k's on the clock. It came with the mats including the rear mat and the toyota bullbar fitted. Got it at the right price for me and good trade on my rodeo. I will be getting the manuals etc on thursday or friday but in the mean time i just need to know about the fuel gauge. (last thing i want is to run out of diesel and glaze the engine over within a day of getting it. At the moment the gauge is just above empty (just like a car yard to make sure there is no fuel in a vehicle) and it has a green light saying 90L. now what does the green light mean and does the gauge show the contents of both tanks combined and therefore it is time for me to fill up straight away?

    Thanks

    Muddles

My Wife's future shopping list includes in order a Winch (Most likely a Tigerz), Bash Plates, Rear Bar, Dual Battery setup and a 60l Fridge. And the list gets longer each time we talk about the car.

the fuel gauge works in two ways when the green 90 light is on it means you r on your last 90 litres, when the green light is on it will work as a normal gauge, when the green 90 light is off it means you have above 90 litres so the gauge will work from full to half a tank, meaning you have between 90 and 180 litre, if ya get me drift.
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Yep ... if the green light is on and the needle is near empty .... add fuel.

I find it confusing (although not had car long)
If 90L light is on does that mean the sub tank is empty?
I put 90 litres in last night and the light went off and the needle is on about half a tank.
So do I have half a tank of fuel PLUS another 90 litres in sub tank?

I could look in manual (ridiculous) but Chippy will know

            Hahahahahaha

OK ... here we go .....

With 180 L on board the green light is off and the gauge will register FULL.

As you drive around the gauge will register 3/4's then 1/2 ....

Then once you have used 1/2 of your fuel load (its actually slightly more than half but we won't go into that) ..... The green light will come on and the gauge will return to the top (FULL position)

As you drive the gauge will move through all the positions ... 3/4's, 1/2, 1/4 and on towards empty ..... with the low fuel warning light coming on with approx 20 L left in the tank.

You could probably think of it as .....
Green light OFF - running off the 1st tank
Green light ON - running off the 2nd tank

..... but, just to be confusing, it doesn't actually do that.
Fuel is drawn from one tank ... and as fuel is used more fuel is pumped in from the second tank .... constantly.

I prefer to completely ignore that last bit of info ..... and just think of it as two tanks

            Cheers

Think of it this way. If the green light is off you have more than 90L in your tanks and the gauge is reading the first 90L (From full to half). If the green light is on you have 90L or less and the gauge is reading your last 90L (From full to empty.

The tanks work together, ie they don't drain from one or the other first, they reciculate diesel between the two.

              Edit: Chippy is onto it.

This should probably go in the other 'winge' thread, but I would like to complain that the green light is too bright at night.

                  Nige.

The fact it hurts the hip pocket BIG time - i never let the fuel light come on. Plus, coming into winter its too bleedin cold at nights to be standing and fillin her up for 30mins!

Thats why you should use (where available) hi-flow pumps and fill up in a 1/3 of the time.

Yeah - operative words "where available". None near my neck of the woods (to the best of my knowledge). Lucky to have 1 diesel pump in the plethora of petrol ones at our servo.

The green light do actually dim, but I suspect they are LEDs and they dim at a different rate than the bulbs. Mine dim but only after the other dash lights are all but out!!!!
