  • Intro and fuel filter question

    Hi All
Just bought an 08 120 diesel auto. Pretty damn happy so far!
I like the ride quality and the 5 speed auto compared to the 4 speed auto Hilux at work.
Its all standard except for the bull bar and probably will stay that way.

I am hopefully doing the right thing and replacing all the filters . Thought I would stick to Ryco gear but I am not satisfied with the Z699 fuel filter construction quality. The 5 holes near the O ring look like they have been punched with a very blunt punch. The holes all have jagged edges and my concern is that this metal waste may end up in my fuel. There is no way I would install this particular filter.

I have contacted Ryco and after sending a photo from my phone, they want it returned and will send a replacement.
    Has anyone encountered this before?
    Cheers
    Mal

No. Usually bulk buy either OEM or Wesfil. Also run an additional Racor prior to main under bonnet filter.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.

I run brand name filters from Sydney filters and buy on line. I also run brand CAT WFS and toyota WFS filters 5 micron and 30 micron.

          Fuel filter update

Received the replacement filter and still not prepared to install it in my 120. The replacement appeared better than the first but still has a rough feel around the 5 holes. I contacted ryco and asked for feedback on the returned unit and was told it was within tolerance. I couldn't get a value for the tolerance of the rough edges.

I think I will stick to Toyota Genuine filters. Can someone confirm that the correct filter part number is 23390-30180

Last digits 30180 correct for 120, 30350 for 150 increased fuel flow on 150 from what I can understand.
I use Terrain Tamer filters as complete kit cheaper than a Toyota fuel filter and made to meet and exceed manufacturers specifications.
The five holes in the filter are oval and I suspect they are drilled before the base plate is pressed into shape from a flat sheet thus distorting the holes.
The distortion done in pressing could create rough edges and would expect similar on genuine.
My Prado has done 192,000 using these filters since end of warranty and over 400,000 on my previous Landcruiser.

Those holes are from either a blunt punching tool or cheap shit Chinese steel because no one is willing to pay for Aussie steel that is actually made to meet ISO standards. Soon there will be no such thing as Aussie steel....glad I got that off my chest

The hole is not a problem provided that there are no small pieces of metal that can fall off, on the plus side it is upstream of the filter so should be caught before getting to the injection system where it would do real harm.

We won't need any after they stop knocking out Falcons, Commodores and Camrys.

I usually bulk-buy 6 x WESFIL units for about the same price as 2 x Genuine Toyota filters. Never had an issue with quality or performance.
