  • Time to part ex ?

Hi All , trying this post again I think I over stepped the mark in the rules dept, I did do a search on my question which yeilded a zero so i'll try again, I have an 02, 3 Lt T/D 90 series with 184 K's on clock, just looked up the trade in price on red book and it says $13,000 from the dealer (nearly fell over) so even if he gave me 15 our budget would be 25 so around 40 with trade in, what could I expect to get for that kind of money, year, model, etc, also have been told to hang back as there may be a few bargains coming, how long do you hold back ? we'd really like the newer engine (129KW) but I think that may be out of our budget unless we wait a year but then mine would be worth zilch I fear, so what do I do ?
    thanks in advance,
and a merry xmas to all,
    Dave

Dave, have you considered selling privately. If you sold for a reasonable price and were cashed up; you might find you could get a much better deal - either privately or thru a dealer.

    Good luck with it.

Yes thanks Bear, I agree but what do I do about getting to work when I've sold mine ? I mean it could be a long time before I find the right car and where I work is in the bush so no public transport I'm afraid, but you are right the going rate for mine privately is about 22 to 25 in the local papers, dealers eh, legalised crooks is all LOL

Yes Yota and thats the thing thats bugged me from the beggining its a really good runner with so far no probs at all and its got everyhting I need for towing etc also if I waited I'd get nearer the newer engine I wanted because it would be cheaper this time next year so unless I got an offer I couldn't refuse I may as well stay put, thanks for the input,
          regards,

This will, of course, be entirely a decision that you will have to make. I guess it comes down to need versus desire, and available finances.

If your current car does the trick and isn't broke... then don't change. Sure, newer cars come with some improvements, but at the end of the day, these all come at a price. Is the price of a newer vehicle worth perhaps the costs of continuing to run your present Prado? Are you anticipating any significant mechanical costs for your current car? If you bought a second hand car, would it be in as cared for condition as yours?

I recently faced similar questions when I upgraded to a 2008 Prado from a 2000 alternate brand 4wd. I chose to upgrade on many factors including the continuing running and servicing costs of my older vehicle versus the improvements, potential savings (on running and servicing costs) and the financial ability to upgrade. In my case, I chose to trade-in my older vehicle as it had become quite a liability. It was worth it, IMO, to accept a lower than retail price to know that I didn't have to worry about anything going wrong just prior to the sale. And given the recent economic climate, it was perhaps a wise move. I note that my old car is still sitting on the lot. If I hadn't traded it in, I suspect I would still be waiting for a buyer today.

If time isn't critical, then save your money and wait for a good deal to come along. There has been a few great deals on offer even via this forum alone (check out those in the 'Sold' archive). I am sure that something will present for you in the New Year if you aren't in a rush. Good luck with whatever you choose. 8)

Thank you for that , yes all that you mention is going through my head, and like you I know at nearly 60 if I got a newer model with low K's while I'm still financially able , it would probably see me out (not that I'm saying your that old, lol) whilst the Prado is depreciating by the minute a newer one would be less prone to expensive repairs and as you say all that and more have to be considered, hmmm, as you say I think I'll let the new year come and see what transpires, but for sure its a hard one,
              regards,

In my opinion the more you buy and sell a car the more money you waste. If your car is fine then keep it, as you know the problems.
The price you pay for a new vehicle is insuring you against future break down problems but at a huge premium.
End story, if you have a 2 grand piece of machinery, you pay for repairs often. If you have a brand new car you pay for interest and minimal repars. You pay one way or the other. Depends on what you can afford.

Your dead right , the car may not be worth much market value wise but it's a seriously cabable vehicle and fitted with all I need and I have a mate who works for Toyo that can get parts at cost so I htink I;ll hang on a while,
thank you for the input it's been great,
                    best wishes,

Dave, if you decide to keep your existing truck; have you considered getting it "chipped"? You could check out viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1936&p=24928&hilit=chip#p2492 8 for some discussion on the costs and benefits. A search of PP should uncover some other threads as well.

Good luck with it; whatever your decision.

                      Cheers

Aren't Toyota having a 2008 run-out sale. Maybe you can get a new one at a good price if you are lucky enough.

Keep them all. My wife is really great.

She let me build up my 95series which I bought new in 1998. All the fruit lift, barwork, BFGs, etc, still goes and looks good.

I just picked up my brand new 120 series T/dsl GXL. All the fruit, lift, bars, BFGs goes even better and looks great. Same colour as 95, dune (beige).

Plus I got a replica cobra in the shed too!

She's got her little camry and she's happy.

                          I'm happy too.
