    Roof Rails Finish

    Hi

    I have the standard black rails fitted to an 07 VX.

    My question is that they mark easily from overhead branches etc, they are not deeply scratched but what can be done to make the marks disappear short of respraying them?

    Bob aren't those rails a plastic type material? I don't have them on mine but I'm looking at getting some if I can find them for the right price.

    The only way I can think of getting out scratches in that sort of material would be some sort of clear coating. Maybe some type of matt finish laquer or something similar. With some plastics you can get away with using metal polish to get marks out but be careful, as other plastics don't like metal polish at all.

    Some type of heat treatment could also work but that could be a very delicate operation.

        Actually, I wonder if you could do any good with some type of black filler?? The trouble would be matching it up. Spray the lacquer on top of that and viola!!....... Maybe

          I'm not 100% sure but when I get up to the height of the roof rails, they seem to be metal, possibly covering a hard plastic. As I have not removed them or looked at them in details I cannot confirm or deny.

          But as mine appear to be painted steel, I think that a light polish will do it.

          Anyone removed the roof rails to see how they are manufactured?

            Anodized aluminium main bars, with Plastic end caps.

            Meguires do a product that fixes the end caps, I think it is called plastic and vynal restore. Designed to be used on the grey unpainted bumper bars. Brings the end caps, and foot step on the rear bar, and the ARB fog light surrounds , up like brand new.

            Who says you can't still have a good looking serious 4X4.

              I've removed/installed the roof rails before and yep, they are basically steel with plastic end caps and a plastic cap covering the fixings on the middle support.

              Looks like the Meguire's might be the go.

                What's involved in removing the roof rails altogether, ie if you want to fit a full roof rack?

                Somebody told me you have to drop the roof lining - is this correct?
