  • Wiper refills and ridiculous cost.............

Apologies if this is already raised or I am in the wrong area but I did search a bit.

My gripe.....the ridiculous cost of the wiper rubber! Sydney City Toyota $20 each for passenger and driver's side for a total of $40 :x

I was irritated and near Homebush stopped at Truscott's Toyota.....$25 each :!: Robbery I say :!: But I needed a pair right away so I purchased.

The frustration.....it appears you cannot buy aftermarket such as Trico unless you change the assembly as well so it then accommodates Trico. What a rip :!:

Have they changed wiper design over the years?

I only just bought some this week at Super Cheap Auto. $8 pair, rubber only... my 05/06 GXL takes the standard 6mm wide ones.

          Rubber only - 6mm passenger, 8mm driver
Mick - I went the silicon ones, hence the higher price.

I went cheap and bought "Aunger" rubber with graphite coating... they are noisey as... drives me insane. Next time I'm there I'll get the Bosch Silicone ones I had in my hand in the first place  see.. be tight fisted and end up paying twice....

Mine were/are both the same size... and cut to the same length.... Maybe Toyota did an in production change at some stage?...

Thanks :!: I may have a look in SuperCheap one day.

The rubber has a notch on one end that the prongs on the assembly hold. Once I get a chance I'll take a pic and post.

                      This weird!
When I bought them the code in the shop guide stated 6mm for both sides. I knew the drivers was 8mm so swapped it. My brother has an 05 model and his is the same as mine - one 6mm and one 8mm. Maybe Toyota couldn'y make up their mind.

Re: Wiper refills and ridiculous cost.............

I use the Trico metal backed 8mm and 6mm refills, they are the ones we use at work, quiet as and work effectively. As for the glass - talk to a windscreen installer and get some "proper" glass cleaner - comes in a powder - looks like clay and you apply it with a wet cloth and it will make the glass seem like new. I'll find out the name of it and report back.

Oh and BTW mines an '04 with the different sizes on both sides.

Maybe I should have done a search on this before I tried to replace the original blades (rubber+backing) with supa Cheap refills...

I have chucked the original backings some weeks ago and the 3rd party replacement driver's side 8mm doesn't quite hold the windscreen in the top 4" or so - water steaks instead of dries. So toddled on down to Tojo Spares and asked for an original right side replacement and after several days rubber only turns up. But I need backing as well I claim! That will be $156 thank you very much as you need the entire wiper blade. Offer declined.

Anyone else solve this little problem?
