  • Dust on rear door

I have recently bought a 120 series and travel mainly dirt roads. The dust accumilates on the rear door and window which makes it impossible to see through. I have to wash the door and window every night and dont wan tto use the wiper as the rear glass is getting scratched. Is there anything I can do to limit the amount of dust collection. I have noticed on the new prado and fortuner that there is a protruding piece above the door. Does this limmit the collection of dust

    In a word - nope.

Mine collects dust on the rear as well, it's just the nature of the design of the body.

            Re: Dust on rear door

I know this problem only too well. Sometime I can't see a thing out the back window due to dust!

I have a couple of questions for those who have dust deflectors.

            1. How well do they actually remove dust? Is it possible to quantify a before and after reduction figure such as 50% less dust after installing the device?
            2. Does the deflector remove dust only from the rear window or does it remove dust from the brake lights, spare tyre etc?
            3. Given that it channels air, does it only work at particular speeds? Once that dust attaches itself to the body of the car, it seems very resistant to being blown off by air.

            Thanks.

It works at speed, don't ask what thou.

It's better than nothing overall and cheaper than getting the painted spoiler.

I have a Genuine Toyota deflector fitted to my 95 and it works mint! I fitted it to the car years ago when my father in law bought it new, easy as with a couple of clips and a bit of doublesided tape if I recall correctly (no need to drill holes). He has a farm in Southwest WA and was getting terrible red dust from the pea gravel down there.

I would make a couple of calls to your local Toyota dealer as being the 120series they may have a few floating around they might get rid of cheap.

The spoiler doesn't get rid of dust, it attracts it   :!:

Hi Fellas. Years ago when I was in the workshop we used to fit tailgate air deflectors to the holden stationwagons. They picked up the air flowing along the roof and forced it downward into the low pressure area of the tailgate as you drove along eliminating the dust problem - they worked a treat! They are a simple foil about the same basic shape as a venesion blind on two or three brackets.

I put the Tojo deflector on my 95 series as well, absolute waste of time and cash, made no change.

I've got five in the car and the back is usually maxed out with all sorts of gear so I can't see out the back window anyway. Yep, covered in dust but the side mirrors work well. I wont be wasting my money on one of the those deflectors as I usually can't see past the gear in the back to see out the window.

x2. has always been on the car for me so can't say what it would be like without it. but once you get some momentum up it does seem to help move some of the dust.

Maybe driving backwards at say 50kays will stop the dust collecting on the rear window.

                              Re: Dust on rear door

I have the deflector on mine. It doesn't remove the dust, just prevents most of it from settling there in the first place. You still have to use the rear washer/wiper occasionally, but that's it.

IMHO, it's a pretty simple, but useful addition.
