  • Gas bottle in basket on roofrack

I know there are a few posts about gas bottles, but I have a specific question about whether anyone has experience in putting a smaller 1-3Kg gas bottle in a basket.

Carrying these things seem to be a mission and it would appear general consensus has it that they should not be carried inside. So, thinking about my setup I'm considering getting a Rhino basket (for the OzTent RV4) to mount on the Rhino Aero bars.

Would I be able to mount a smaller gas bottle / cylinder safely to the basket?
If you've done something similar, I'd really like to hear your experiences, how you mounted it, etc.

I'm thinking I'll have to mount it on top of one of the cross bars (inside the basket of course) and tie it down somehow. I saw that Rhino makes a gas bottle strap thing, but it appears to only suit a tray or platform (not a basket) and I've come across some posts that suggest it only works with certain bottles (that have a high collar / neck).

I'm keen to use a basket since it allows me to remove it easily and quickly (leaving the rack crossbars) unlike a platform or tray that requires more effort.
What do you think? Should I abandon the idea, and go the platform/tray route?

As a side question, I was thinking about getting the long and narrow basket to fit the OzTent RV4, MaxTrax, Gas Bottle which leaves me with the other half of the rack to load surfboards, etc. Again, anyone done something similar?

    Much obliged,
    Jaans

Re: Gas bottle in basket on roofrack

Jaans i run a similar setup with the rhino heavy duty racks as i have bikes that usually go up there so my setup is a long thin basket in the middle then a bike rack either side. I then change the basket over to a spare wheel carrier if i am really going off the beaten track. Only annoying thing is with the bikes on either side you can only acess the basket from the back so you have to have a bit of a think what you put where

I have not tried the gas bottle holder strap but it seems to have standard hooks on the end so i see no reason why it would not attach to a basket. Another option would be to get an actual gas bottle ring holder that goes on say a camper trailer and use U bolts to mount it to the basket

      Hi Chester

Are the gas bottle holders you are referring to similar to this picture?

      (from Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-5kg-Gas-Bottle ... 483acbc613)

If the above or a similar one had say 2 or 3 legs instead of just the one going underneath the bottle, it might be a good option to clamp it down onto the basket with some U-bolts.

I see Opposite Lock lists a gas bottle holder for the "Rack Master" roof rack system. Looks very sturdy and solid (obviously not suited to me from a tray/rack point of view) but nice idea.

Re: Gas bottle in basket on roofrack

I usually put a 4.5kg bottle up on our rack and tie it down with a normal rachet strap. I did look at one of the Rhino gas bottle holders but at about $90 retail I thought that a little steep.

Yeah Janns they are the ones another even cheaper option i have seen that works well is go to your local supermarket and steal a milk crate, put your gas bottle in it and ratchet strap the whole lot to the roof.

Re: Gas bottle in basket on roofrack

Chester: Thanks... You won't see nothing :| (I'll explore the milk crate avenue some more)

Schaffer: Interesting...and not a bad price either. I might even be able to but two square nuts inside the roof rack cross-bar and mount the BCF bracket directly to the cross bar, but maybe have the basket inbetween / on top to provide further support / distribution of weight of the gas bottle.

I've finally decided which long and narrow basket to get: I was concerned that there isn't enough width for the Rhino RLBHL basket and a set of surfboards, but I tested out the dimensions of the Rhino RLBHL basket today as Roof Racks Galore and I'm happy that it leaves me with enough space on the other half of the cross-bar to put the surfboards, while the basket will cover OzTent, MaxTrax, and some solution to gas bottle.
