  • new to the world of 4WD and Prados

    G'day all,

I have just purchased a 2008 D4D GXL Prado with bugger all kms on her. It is my first Prado, first Toyota and first 4WD, before this I have had two awesome Holden Utes. It is a massive change to drive on the black top that is for sure. But the main reason it was purchased was to see more of Australia off the black top. My wonderful wife said that i was only allowed to get a new vehicle if it had back seats!

So far she is stock, but like everybody else I have a list a mile long of upgrades - recovery gear, tyres, suspension, bar work etc etc. The limited factor is going to be cash, so I’d better keep working.

I have already spent a bit of time looking around this forum for tips and we can't wait to get onto the dirt.

    Cheers

Re: new to the world of 4WD and Prados

    Welcome
You will get a wealth of information from this site. Look at the rig build Up section to see how others have progressed with modifications.
If you plan on doing any sort of offroad trips, a set of AT tyres and a suspension upgrade would be the first thing I would consider.
While the Prado can cope quite well without any mods, these will make it more enjoyable and safe.
A set of basic recovery gear including snatch strap, shackles and an air compressor should also be acquired.
Go on a 4WD training course, or consider joining a 4WD club, go on a few of their trips and learn the basics.
Anyone can buy a 4WD and go offroad, but being able to do it well is really like learning to drive all over again.
Then you can add other things as needs and budget allow.
    Cheers, Wayne

      G'day Travis and Ainslie,

With your new Prado you've got a great start on seeing Australia. It's an outstanding touring vehicle and with mods can become quite the serious off-roader.

I suggest you join as many PP trips as you can manage. Formal 4WD training and reading forums are a great way to learn, but the real learning occurs when you're out on a trip with like minded folk. The learning never ends...

      Enjoy!

        Thanks guys

We are looking at joining a club to learn the basics - can you suggest any, we are on the Central Coast of NSW. Hopefully we can get out and about with other forum members too.

I have to learn how to use this forum properly too - for example putting location on profile

        cheers
