I’ve upgraded from a 90 series Prado at the start of the year so I improved the 120 series Prado after 17 years experience.
After travelling up the Oodnadatta Track, Mt Dare, Finke area I finally popped out on the tar. The next morning I pumped the tyres back up, fuelled up and headed further north on the Stuart Hwy.
I stopped on the side of the road and crawled under the car to readjust my shock absorbers when I noticed diesel running out from near the tanks. As we had no phone reception I just drove to the nearest big town where I eventually had the fuel tank connection repaired.
The 90, 120 and 150 series Prados have dual tanks, however the 120 and 150s only have one fuel cap and the dual tanks are linked by a large diameter ‘hose’.
When the ‘hose” ages, they get brittle and crack due to shaking from the dirt corrugations. Apparently the hoses regularly crack if they are no longer supple. It is so common many mechanics keep the hoses in stock.
I’m confident my ‘new’ 120 had the original fuel hose.
I hope sharing this will help others better prepare their 120 & 150 series for dirt/desert travelling.
