  • Spares for Outback Travel

Planning an outback trip next month (Corner Country, Birdsville & Strzelecki tracks).

What components have people had trouble with and would recommend carrying spares for.

      There's the usual items:

Drive belt - important given the 120 uses only one belt for water pump, alternator, hydraulic pump and air con compressor.

Top and bottom radiator hoses or some method of repairing them, a break in one of these would be a show stopper. Maybe some sort of putty or glue incase you get a stick into the radiator tank, or even the plastic fuel tank inside the steel bash plate. (Although you'd have to be remarkably unlucky for that to happen)

After my experiences here, I'd strongly recommend packing some EFI rated fuel line hose and appropriate hose clamps.

Nothing else springs to mind as a specific Toyota 120 bush spares requirement. Maybe a copy of the workshop manual, the Ellery one might be handy if you run out of dunny paper! Anyone else with experiences/suggestions?

      Drew.

Carry some eggs for the radiator in case of a leak.! Myth Busters proved an egg cracked into the radiator will seal the leak. 8)
I dont know how long it would last or what it does to your radiator..but who cares, it would have to be recored or replaced anyway.!

Drews pretty well nailed most items.
Only other thing I could think of was filters, esp air. Assume if you have heaps of dust you will want to replace them yourself along the way to save some $.

We did this trip (minus Birdsville) earlier this year.
            Top places.
We went up the old Strzelecki and down the New.
I prefered the old, Less traffic (none) and less tyre chipping.
            http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=587

As for spares Drew said it well enough.
We towed a camper trailer with same size wheel/tyres.
120litres of water, 80 litres of diesel.
When we got home and inspected one of our trailer tanks (2 60L jobbies)1 had cracked.
It happened in Flinders ranges but it could happen anywhere.
So I would add water in seperate containers.
Frantelle water from woolies or coles sell them in 5litre bottles with wine flask like pourers on them that can be refilled.

And a camera to post your photos on here for all to see.

            Enjoy .
            Jeff
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

              Thanks all,

I was actually asking about specific components that people may have had fail while they were away :?

I already have EVERYTHING mentioned (plus a full set of filters, front brake lines, wheel studs and nuts) - and it all lives with the vehicle permanently!

Hole in the radiator apparently (according to Toyota) from a rock flicking up and missing all enginge splash plates, engine, exhaust, fans, belts radiator shroud etc and popping a small hole in the core.
(Sounds suss to me considering i couldnt even see in there) They replaced under warranty which was even more odd.
This was from a simple trip, ADL to Woomera/Roxby, suffered a puncture (spiked tyre) at Lake Torrens on the ironstone, then borefield road to Oodnadatta track, maree and back thru flinders on bitumen.
Pretty basic trip I thought. (I could have taken a commodore!)

Gloves, 2 straps, jack, jacking plate, rated hooks,2 x bow shackles.
Tyre gauge, Air Compressor, Sand Flag

serpantine belt, fuel filter, air filter,
                  wheel nuts and studs,
                  1lt engine,gearbox/diff/trans oil
Spare shocker washers, rubbers, locators, and mounting bolts including SPARE front and rear shock (You'll need a spring tensioner to change the front shock)
2 SPARE tyres, tyre repair equipment
Rated recovery points front and rear
                  qty of type A fuses (mini spade), a 50A type B, & a 120A type C fuse.
a bit of fusible link wire is a pretty useful spare out in the desert.

If drive carefully and to the conditions nothing should brake at all...

There's one essential - Duct Tape

Thanks everyone - still nothing mentioned that I haven't got already though!

Can I take it from this that the rear diff is the only thing anyone has broken?

You just throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Chippy, I'm a bit concerned for you. You completely LIVE on pradopoint, what's gonna happen when you go bush soon? I reckon you're gonna snap and be trying to plug your laptop into trees and stuff looking for a fix!
