It's alright - I've got a couple of caravan parks booked with wireless internet access and my laptop is coming with me - it's part of the deal to have the kids keep up-to-date with their school work (great excuse - hey).

Really ... I spend all of my life working on computers - these days a Pradopoint window pops up as soon as I login and I get my fix, whenever the opportunity presents, during the day.

More importantly - three and a half weeks to find out all of those things I don't know about yet, find out which thread the how - to's are posted on and go and do them ......

    Cheers

I reckon you'll end up with a huge satellite dish on your camper trailer so you can stay on the 'net when in the boonies.

I've got a photo somewhere of my Subaru parked with the Parkes Radio Telescope right behind it, so it looks like "The Dish" is mounted on the roof! Shame it's an old paper photo and I have no idea where it is, otherwise I'd post it.

A spare key. - Most people wouldn't think of it but with the coded keys you would be in deep Sh*!t if it doesn't work or gets lost.

              Spot on Squeaky

I've only got the one key (and the service key) and I'm blown away at the price of another coded key. But I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get one - just for peace of mind.

My spare key lives in a secret location on the vehicle so if we get locked out we can still get in. There's not a lot of value having the spare key in the glovebox or your wife's handbag in that situation.

I had the pleasure of loosing my key for one of my Subaru's years ago at the snow. I had to borrow a car and drive the 14hrs return to Sydney to get our spare from the safe. The resort we were staying at found my key weeks later when some snow had melted, just as I was about to order a replacement. Phew!

So I've been bitten before, silly that I forgot to mention it in this thread until someone else bought it up. ops:

Hi first time in this forum only found it to day read it on the side of a white PRADO heading in to the Simpson Desert last week as i ws comming out.
As for the keys a great idea Generally we have other cars in the group and we swap our spare keys so if one gets lost or misplaced we have another in the group. I also carry upper and lower rad. hoses and a small blue tarp (for a water skirt or to lay on in the mud) and a engine belt all bundled to gether and zip tied to the fire wall so i know where it is all the time. and a roll off gaffa tape

PS for my last 2 prados I only took off the spare components when i sold the car and not b4

                    Regards

Spara - good advice . . . . . and welcome to Pradopoint. Glad to see that the stickers are getting noticed. Also great to hear of Prado's getting to the far reaches that many of us are hoping to visit and but have not got to yet! I am sure your experiences will be well regarded.

                      Cheers - Byrnsie

                            spares for outback

I would be taking some spare CV boots. I was in Broome 2 years ago and had to wait a week while Toyota dealers flew some in from Perth. No one in Broome had any.

Not sure if you have lock nuts on your wheels - but probably best NOT to have any lock nuts just in case the key or tool is lost/broken.

If you have rear SLS, maybe a spare airbag?

Things that can fail include idler pulleys (especially if they get messed up by past visits into deep boggy watery places) and alternator bearings.

I'd be bringing some spare fuses and a volt meter.

If there's a lot of water in the outback, turn your snorkel backwards as you'd be surprised by the amount of water that can fly in through the snorkel.

Spare air and oil filters - I've seen people do an oil change at the BIG 4 caravan park at Alice.

Test your jack for proper operation and bring along a sturdy piece of wood for your jack as a base, because you may be changing tyres on very uneven ground.

Stop at an Exide store and get your batteries tested for correct CCA - your batts may be under capacity but you won't know it without a tester.

Go to NOVUS or OBriens or anyone of those windscreen repair places and get their emergency patch kit, which is basically clear stickers which you can cover a bullseye or crack on the windscreen if you get stone chips. If you don't cover the cracks, water will get in, and the cracks will grow.

If you don't already have it, fit the dust filter to your airconditioning unit.

Bring a couple of spare tire valves, just in case.

There's lots of things to bring, but just watch the overall weight....

Some good advice there Lawrance. Must admit I am unsure of one of your points:

I have not heard of these before. How do I know if my AC has a dust filter. Where is it fitted. If they are a retro-fit, what do they cost. Are they a simple DIY fit.

Sorry if these are dumb questions.
