  • Another New Owner (2005 Prado 1kz-te)

With a growing family and the need for more cabin space, I'm about to take the plunge and give up my 03 Hilux SR5 which I absolutely love.

The SR5 has been trouble free, and after reading about all the issues with the Prado, I hope I'm not making a mistake.

Congratulations. I think you will find that only a few people are having any real issues and those that are are unlucky. The 1kz Prados are reletiverly trouble free with the older engine being proven in both the older Hilux and 90 series Prado prior to the 120 taking it on. We have the April 2006 1KZ and it has been great. The only issue we have experienced has been to do with the ABS system but that was repaied under warranty.

Schaffer ... Thanks for the info and encouragement ... The 05 Prado has 55 000km and has been maintained by the dealer. My other issue is the cracks on the dashboard which is a common problem.

I'll be letting the SR5 go ... a friend will be buying it. I wish I could have afford to keep the SR5.

How's the fuel economy on the Prado as compared to the SR5?

Schaffer I'll be getting the Prado early in the new year. Will post pics then.

It was on an executive lease with one of the energy companies.

Anything to look out for? I got the service report and noted there were some issues with the a/c. They did some work on the a/c evaporator.

                Here's a pic :

                  not much goes wrong really

Replaced suspension as the shocks were shagged 90,000 went after market 2 inch lift (makes the best difference)
                  Belts done at 150,000
Injectors could proably do with refurb
Changed auto transmission fluid even though toyota only says to inspect at 100,000

Apart from that just service by the book and use good quality oil still getting high 11,s to low 12,s per 100 so i am happy

Chester that sound good to me.

I'm really enjoying the new ride but unfortunately I'm also stuck in lots of traffic. Did manage to be at the top of a traffic light and let her go when the light turned green. Boy oh boy ... she's much faster than the SR5!

PS Baby wasn't on board at that time.
