  • Is there a problem hitching van to new Prado

On another forum mention was made of a problem hitching van to a new Pajero .

This prompted another post from a Prado owner which said

Its not just the Pajero that has the back door problem. I have just picked up our brand new Prado. Hooked up the van (which has a Hyland hitch - so no handle in the way), dropped the Hayman Reece tow ball adjustment by two notches (was on a Navara) to level both the Prado and the van and bugger me if it isn't one cm too high to open the door. I can drop the HR one more notch and hitch the bars up one more link but I think I will still be compromising the balance of both the car and van so I will probably just learn to live with not being able to open the back door when the van is hooked up
Has anyone else had this problem?
    Would Polyair airbags solve it?

Yep. With the standard Toyota tow hitch I found that I could only open the back door a foot or so before it smacked into the hitch handle on my little box trailer. I turned the hitch upside down and clearance is now not an issue.

When I hooked up the CT it was even worse - 'cause the CT has a nice handy brake lever that doubles as a door stop. The TREG adaptor I have for my trailer also doesn't like the slim profile of the Toyota hitch - the locator pins have got nothing to locate on - so I bought another hitch with a bit of a step-down and the CT hooks up fine - rides close to level - and the door opens.

May not be the ideal solution - but I'm glad I found out before I started my trip and found the door couldn't open. One of my kids rides in the back (he's the feral one who stirs the crap out of his brothers and they want him as far away as possible) and it's important that he can get in and out via the back door.

My rear door opens over my Treg hitch using the std Toyota tounge. the door then bashs into the gas bottles on the drawbar... but you can get the door open a fair way. I was thinking of getting an extended hitch tongue to allow the door to open fully and also address the issue Chippy mentions about the locator pins that effectively do nothing on the Toyota tongue, but haven't got around to it (and we leave in two days so won't be!)
